← Day 624

the keeper's cottage · day 624 · afternoon

The air thickens

Kevin and Jenny meet in the kitchen area as the light begins to fail. The first heavy drops of the approaching storm hit the tin roof.

Kevin entered the crawlspace to inspect the rising water beneath the cottage foundation while the rain continued. Jenny stayed on the porch, attempting to secure the garden tarps and monitor her swelling ankle as the storm front approached.

🌿 Jenny03:59

Is the tarp secured on the dinghy?

Close the notebook firmly to protect the pages from the sweat.

💭 peek at the thought
If the pressure drops any faster, the boat won't even make it through the channel regardless of the schedule.

Tarp's battened. Bow and stern lines doubled. Storm anchor out fifty metres." I set the mug down, wipe my hands on my thighs. "Foundation's taking water at the northeast corner. Crawlspace is wet. Need to check the sump before dark.

Walk to the back door, pull on my oilskin jacket, and step out onto the porch to check the foundation drainage.

💭 peek at the thought
She's asking about the dinghy tarp when the cottage foundation's weeping and the barometer's at 982. She's deflecting — focusing on what she can see me do rather than what's coming for her leg. The infection's past her knee. Helicopter in eight hours. We need to move.

🌿 Jenny04:01

Take the flashlight, the light's failing too fast.

Limp toward the door, shifting my weight to the good leg.

💭 peek at the thought
If the crawlspace floods, the seed tin will rot before I ever get it planted.

🔧 Kevin04:02

Headlamp's on the shelf by the radio. Take it. You lead — you know where the water's pooling.

Grab the LED headlamp from the shelf, click it on, and hold it out to her.

💭 peek at the thought
She's coming with me on a leg that's burning up. Stubborn as the rust on these hinges. But she knows the crawlspace access better than I do — she's the one who mapped the drainage last month. And I'm not leaving her alone in the kitchen with the fever and the silence.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny04:03

I'll lead. Just stay close and watch the tide.

Reach for the headlamp and strap it over my head.

💭 peek at the thought
I can't see my own way through this heat, let alone the drainage line.

🔧 Kevin04:04

Your call. But if that leg gives out, I'm carrying you the rest of the way. No argument.

Fall in behind her, one hand ready at her elbow, watching the ground ahead and the water rising at the cottage corners.

💭 peek at the thought
She's strapping the light on me like I'm the one who needs guiding. Her fingers are hot against the strap — fever heat. She's not letting me carry her, not letting me go first, not letting me pretend this is just another storm prep. The tide's high and the crawlspace hatch is twenty metres from the door across ground that's already turning to soup.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny04:05

Just watch the water, it's moving too fast.

Step off the porch, flinching as the cold water hits my ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
If he has to carry me, I'll never forgive myself for letting it get this.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin04:06

Hatch is thirty metres. Stay on the high ground — garden wall edge. I'm right here.

Move alongside her, boots finding the garden wall's raised edge, scanning the cottage corners where water's already chewing the mortar.

💭 peek at the thought
Water's already over the path. Rising faster than the tide tables said — surge pushing ahead of the front. She flinched. Not from cold. The infection's eating her and she's walking into floodwater because the crawlspace hatch won't wait. Eight hours to helicopter. We clear the sump, secure the foundation, get her to the dinghy by 0330. That's the plan. The sea doesn't care about plans.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny04:07

It's already pooling by the tank.

Lean against the stone wall, watching the water swirl around the foundation.

💭 peek at the thought
If the crawlspace goes, the whole survey is ruined before I even start.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin04:08

You wait here. I'll check the sump and the tank footing. Two minutes.

Peel off toward the tank, light cutting through rain, testing the ground with each step — checking if the concrete pad's still solid or if the water's already undermined it.

💭 peek at the thought
She's stopping. The wall's her excuse but her weight's all on the good leg and her breathing's changed — shallow, careful. The tank sits on a concrete pad but the ground beneath's washing out. If the pad shifts, the inlet cracks, we lose 400 litres. The sump pump's in the crawlspace, but the hatch is another fifteen metres past the tank. She knows this. She's giving me the opening to go alone.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny04:09

Be careful, the ground looks like soup back there.

Watch the beam of his light, ignoring the throbbing in my calf.

💭 peek at the thought
If that tank shifts, the whole water supply goes with it.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin04:10

Pad's shifted. Inlet's stressed. I'll check the hatch and the pump discharge.

Reach the crawlspace hatch, kneel in the muck, and pry it open — shining the light down into the dark to find the pump and the discharge hose exit.

💭 peek at the thought
Soup's right. The clay's turned to slurry — each step sinks past the ankle. The tank pad's tilted, maybe two degrees, inlet pipe strained. Water's not just pooling, it's *moving* — a slow river under the cottage, eating the mortar. Sump pump's useless if the discharge hose is buried. Hatch is just ahead, warped timber frame swelling in the wet. She's watching my light, not moving. Good. Let her rest. The helicopter's the only thing that matters now.
