The Calm Before the Gale

The wind picks up through the spruce trees as the first heavy drops of rain hit the dust. You and Jenny gather inside the cottage to wait out the storm to break.

The rain has transitioned into a rhythmic lpour, drumming against the cottage roof. Inside, the air is heavy with the scent of damp wool and woodsmoke. The barometer continues its slow, steady decline, while the tide remains maxed out, exposing the slick rocks of the southern tide pools.

Fire's banked. Radio's on standby. You need anything before the power cuts?

Check the dinghy mooring lines through the porch window, then secure the generator shed door with the extra ratchet strap.

💭 peek at the thought
Storm's here early. Barometer still dropping. Need to make sure the dinghy lines hold and the generator's sheltered before the wind shifts west.

🌿 Jenny03:41

Just the lantern. And make sure the tin is high.

Reach for the notebook and pencil, tracing the coordinates for the north ridge patch one last time.

💭 peek at the thought
If the power goes, I won't be able to see my sketches clearly. I need to keep the coordinates straight.

🔧 Kevin03:43

Tin's on the top shelf, sealed. Lantern's by the radio. I'll trim the wick.

Light the storm lantern, trim the wick low, and set it on the table. Then check the shortwave — tune to 6215 and listen for Cairns or the supply boat.

💭 peek at the thought
She's thinking of the garden even now. Tin E's already on the top pantry shelf — showed her yesterday. Lantern's on the shelf by the radio.

🌿 Jenny03:45

Keep an eye on the frequency. The barometer is dropping fast.

Pull the blanket over my leg and wince as the red lines pulse against my skin.

💭 peek at the thought
The static is getting louder than the rain. If the radio fails, I'm truly in the dark.

🔧 Kevin03:45

6215's open. Listening. You rest — I'll wake you if anything comes through.

Sit at the radio, headphones on, tuned to 6215 kHz. Log the time and barometer reading in the notebook: 1005 hPa, falling.

💭 peek at the thought
Infection's tracking. Red lines past her knee now. Fever's climbing. Helicopter's the only way out and the window's narrowing. Radio's our lifeline.

🌿 Jenny03:47

Don't let the oil run out.

Close my eyes and try toization the morphology of the sea beet in the dark.

💭 peek at the thought
The heat from the fever is making the room spin. I can't see the edges of the sketch.

🔧 Kevin03:47

I’ll top it up now. Just keep the lantern on and the blanket warm. If the barometer drops more, we’ll need to act fast.

Use the manual pump to transfer an extra 2 L from the reserve tank into the Yanmar’s oil line and check the pressure gauge for a steady rise.

💭 peek at the thought
Oil’s running low. If the Yanmar stalls, the generator dies. I need to keep the flow steady until the storm passes.

🌿 Jenny03:49

I need the coordinates for the north ridge written down clearly.

Reach for the notebook and sketch a rough map of the stable soil patches.

💭 peek at the thought
The engine is humming, but my leg is screaming. If I go, the seeds stay here.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin03:49

Second to third cairn, west face. 47 to 82 meters elevation. Sandy loam, pH 6.2. Carex maritima dominant. I'll write it clean.

Take the notebook from her, turn to a fresh page, and write the coordinates and soil data in clear block letters. Tear the page out and set it on top of the medevac forms in the dry bag.

💭 peek at the thought
She's mapping the Carex transect from memory. North ridge reference cairns are at 15m, 47m, and 82m elevation. Stable soil patches between the second and third cairn — west face, sheltered from salt spray. She needs this documented before the helicopter takes her.

🌿 Jenny03:51

Make sure the tin is in the dry bag with the forms.

Press my hand against my ankle and watch the rain lashes the window.

💭 peek at the thought
He's finally writing it. If the helicopter comes, the island won't be lost.
