The Rising Pressure

Kevin sits on the floor in the crawlspace, watching the water level beneath the leaking tank patch. Jenny sits on the sofa, propping her ankle up while she watches the barometer needle continue its slow downward drift.

A squall hit the cottage with driving rain and rising wind. Kevin verified the water tank patch held under full pump pressure while monitoring the shortwave for coastguard updates. Jenny managed to re-dress her ankle wound with saline and fresh sea beet poultice despite the pain, and logged the barometer's continued drop.

🔧 Kevin05:28

Pump's caught up. Tank patch is dry.

Wipe hands on trousers, stand up from the crawlspace hatch, and walk to the kitchen to check the barometer reading again.

💭 peek at the thought
The water's stopped rising. Patch is holding. But that barometer... 998 and dropping fast. This isn't just rain.

🌿 Jenny05:29

The storm's coming earlier than the forecast said.

Jenny winces as she shifts her weight, clutching her throbbing ankle, and reaches for her notebook to mark the falling pressure on the log.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping fast. If the storm hits before the boat comes, the garden is washed out.

🔧 Kevin05:30

Six hours, maybe less. Need to batten the generator shed and check the dinghy lines.

Move to the radio shelf, switch on the shortwave, and scan for the coastguard weather channel.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Forecast had us at twelve hours. We've got maybe six. The crawlspace is dry but the ground's saturated — if the wind shifts southwest, the surge comes up the gully.

🌿 Jenny05:31

Make sure the seeds are on the high shelf. We can't lose the tin.

Jenny grunts through a sharp spike of pain in her leg and begins to wrap the saline-soaked poultice with trembling fingers.

💭 peek at the thought
If the wind picks up, I won't even be able to get to the porch.

🔧 Kevin05:32

Already done. Tin E's on the top shelf, sealed in the dry bag with the medevac forms and the letter.

Cross the room to the pantry, pull the dry bag down, and hold it out to her so she can see the seal intact.

💭 peek at the thought
Tin E's already on the high pantry shelf — moved it three days ago when the damp started climbing the wall. She doesn't need to worry about that. Her hands are shaking.

🌿 Jenny05:33

Check the seal one more time. I don't trust the humidity.

Jenny reaches out a shaky hand, her fingers brushing the plastic, and she lets out a long, shaky breath she didn't know she was holding.

💭 peek at the thought
At least the seeds are dry. If the cottage holds, I can plant what's left.

🔧 Kevin05:34

Seal's clean. Roll's tight. Clip's engaged.

Press the dry bag into her palm, let her feel the rolled edge and the locked clip, then step back to the radio and adjust the squelch as static hisses through the speaker.

💭 peek at the thought
She needs to see it. Needs to know something's still airtight in this place.

🌿 Jenny05:35

Keep an eye on the radio. If the signal cuts, tell me

Jenny pulls the bag close to her chest, shielding it from the damp air, and watches the way needle dip further.

💭 peek at the thought
If the roof goes, the seeds go. I have to stay awake through this.

🔧 Kevin05:36

Signal's holding. I'll call it if it goes.

Lean closer to the set, finger on the volume, listening through the rising crackle for the coastguard's scheduled broadcast.

💭 peek at the thought
She's tracking the pressure like she's tracking infection — watching for the turn. The radio's been clear all morning but the atmospherics are building. Static's getting louder on the edges.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny05:37

It's going to be a long night.

Jenny leans her head back against the sofa, closing her eyes as she tries to ignore the throb in her leg.

💭 peek at the thought
The air is getting heavy. I can feel the change in my bones.
