The hike to the ridge

They gather their gear to head toward the shrine as the first gusts of wind pick up, carrying the scent of rain.

The onshore breeze has died as the pressure begins to rise, though the air remains heavy with wet season humidity. At the shrine, Kevin and Jenny watch the bruised clouds retreat slowly, waiting for the boat. The tide is receding, exposing the slick rocks of the western shore, but the path back to the cottage is becoming treacherous as the first heavy drops begin to fall.

🌿 Jenny06:09

The wind is turning. If we don't go now, we're stuck until tomorrow.

Jenny tightens the bandage on her ankle and limps toward the door, clutching her way.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping too fast for a long hike; I need to see the ridge stones before the sky truly opens.

🔧 Kevin06:10

Pace yourself. I'll carry the pack.

Grab the daypack from the hook by the door, shoulder it, and follow her out onto the slick path toward the ridge.

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer's still falling. She's right — wait much longer and the track up the ridge turns to grease. Her ankle won't like the climb, but the shrine's the only high ground with a clear shot to the horizon if the radio picks up anything useful.

🌿 Jenny06:11

Just keep moving. The stones get slippery.

Jenny pauses to lean on a sturdy branch, breathing through the sharp pulse in her ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks he's being helpful, but the silence is heavier than the pack today.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin06:12

Take the left line. Moss holds better there. I'm right behind you.

Stay close on her uphill side, one hand free to catch her if the shale gives, scanning the track for the firmest footing.

💭 peek at the thought
She's pushing harder than she should. The inflammation's tracking up the calf still, even with the antibiotics. Ridge path has loose shale under the moss — one wrong placement and she goes down hard. I should've made her a proper staff yesterday, not just grabbed a branch.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny06:13

I know. Watch the edge.

Jenny shifts her weight to the good leg, eyes fixed on the grey outline of the shrine ahead.

💭 peek at the thought
Every step feels like a needle through the calf, but I have to reach the ridge first.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin06:14

Stones are dry still. Lichen's not slick yet.

Plant each step deliberate on the weathered slab approach, testing weight before committing, keeping the pack high and centered so it doesn't throw me off balance if a gust hits the ridge.

💭 peek at the thought
She's memorizing the approach. The shrine stones, the bearing to the lighthouse, the gap in the cliffs where the supply boat appears. Good. Means she's planning to be here for the next one. The wind's picking up salt spray — taste it on my lips. Barometer was 1000 and rising when we left the cottage, but that was an hour ago. Could turn fast.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny06:15

way for long. The wind is changing.

Jenny wipes a bead of sweat from her brow and winces as the ankle throbs against the bandage.

💭 peek at the thought
If the lichen gets wet, this whole ridge becomes ice. I need to be up.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin06:18

We're not going anywhere.

Reach the shrine's stone circle, set the pack down careful on a flat slab, and stand at the western gap where the names are carved deepest — LB, K+J, the fresh softwood scrap with its crooked message — scanning the horizon for the supply bo

💭 peek at the thought
She's not just talking about the wind. The shrine, the stones, the carved initials — she's marking the distance we've come. The extraction forms in the dry bag, Tom's letter burned, the garden half-built but alive. She's saying we're still here. The gust hits the ridge hard, cold salt in my face. Barometer's rise was a lie; pressure's dropping again. I feel it in the chest, old water memory.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🔧 Kevin06:20

Nothing. Barometer's lying. They'll come when the window opens.

Pull the shortwave from the pack, unfold the aerial, and key the mic — "Sorrel Island, position 49-12 North, 006-18 West. Keeper's log day six-twenty-six. Two souls, stores holding, tank full, engine functional. Awaiting supply. Over."

💭 peek at the thought
Nothing on the water but whitecaps and the long roll of the swell. Eight days out and the boat's a ghost. The wind's backed southwest — foul for them crossing the bar. The carved stones are warm under my palm, salt and lichen and sixty years of initials. LB. K+J. The softwood scrap bleaching pale. I stayed. She stayed. The garden's growing. The engine runs. The tank holds. That's the whole report.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny06:21

I hope they're listening to the frequency. continuedDO: Jenny sits on a weathered stone, stretching her leg out to ease the pressure, and watches the first clouds bruise the horizon.

💭 peek at the thought
The radio static is the only thing talking back to us today.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin06:22

They're listening. Cairns doesn't sleep when the bar drops.

Let the mic hang, fold the aerial slow and deliberate, seal the radio back in its dry bag — then settle onto the stone beside her, shoulder to shoulder, watching the front swallow the horizon.

💭 peek at the thought
She's watching the weather come in like she's reading a chart. The bruise on the horizon is a proper front — dark, low, moving fast on that southwest wind. If the supply boat's anywhere near the bar, they're hove to or running for shelter. Coastguard said forty-eight hours minimum. That was yesterday. The radio's only as good as the ionosphere and the listener on the other end. I've called into the dark too many times to count on it.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny06:23

It's getting cold. way fast. continuedDO: Jenny leans her head back against the cool stone, closing her eyes as the first heavy drop of rain hits the dust.

💭 peek at the thought
The wind is going to howl through the gaps in the stones tonight.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin06:24

Time to go. Downhill's faster.

Shoulder the pack, offer her a steadying hand, and start the descent on the left-hand moss line before the shale goes slick.

💭 peek at the thought
The drop hits the back of my hand — fat, cold, the first of thousands. Temperature's dropped five degrees in the time we've been up here. She's exhausted, ankle throbbing, and the ridge path turns to a chute in heavy rain. The cottage is twenty minutes down if we move now, forty if we don't. The garden tarp, the generator lashings, the dock lines — all need a last check before the front hits proper.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny06:25

Lead me. One step.

Jenny takes his hand, shifting her weight carefully onto her heel, and follows the path down toward the cottage.

💭 peek at the thought
If the ankle swells more, I won't be walking the ridge tomorrow.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin06:26

Heel to the inside edge. Rock at your left boot — now. Next step short.

Walk slow and deliberate on the mossy slab descent, calling each hazard a beat before she reaches it, keeping my stride short so she can match it, one hand clamped on hers, the other free for the slope.

💭 peek at the thought
Her fingers are cold, grip tight. She's trusting me with her weight on ground that wants to throw her. Every step she takes is a calculation — heel placement, knee angle, breath held. The rain's coming harder now, fat drops hammering the moss, turning the track dark. My boots know this path. Her boots don't. I'll pick the line, she follows the sound of my steps.
