MIDDAY

The rain continues to fall inside the cottage roof.

The rain intensifies, causing water to leak through the cottage shutter and begin saturating the floorboards. Kevin manages to place buckets under the worst drips, while Jenny secures a heavy tarp over the radio equipment to prevent damage from the spray.

🌿 Jenny05:49

Kevin! Get the buckets! Now!

stand up with a wince, moving toward the kitchen to grab the largest pots.

💭 peek at the thought
The roof is failing and I'm too weak to climb a ladder; water is going to ruin my sketches.

On it.

Grab the two galvanized buckets from the porch corner and the enamel basin from the kitchen shelf, set them under the active drips, then climb the ladder to the loft hatch with a torch to locate the breach.

💭 peek at the thought
Roof leak. Heavy rain finding a new path. Need to catch it fast and trace the entry point before it soaks the radio or the stores.

🌿 Jenny05:51

Watch the corner by the stove, it's coming fast.

ization gather the notebook and the tin of seeds, moving them to the dry shelf in the bedroom.

💭 peek at the thought
If that water hits the notebook, the whole year of data is gone. I need to move the sketches.

🔧 Kevin05:51

Got the corner. You got the radio covered?

Position the largest bucket directly under the stove-corner drip, spread a folded tarp scrap beneath it to catch splash-back, then check the radio shelf — pull the shortwave and the spare coax down onto the table and drape the oilcloth over

💭 peek at the thought
Corner by the stove — that's the chimney flashing. If the lead's lifted or the mortar's gone, water tracks down the flue and hits the hearth. Need to see it from outside, but the rain's too hard to climb safely. Buckets buy time.

🌿 Jenny05:53

Check the floorboards under the basin, the wood is starting to dark.

sit on the kitchen chair, clutching my throbbing ankle and watching the water ripple into the bucket.

💭 peek at the thought
At least he's moving, but the roof is still weeping and my leg is screaming.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin05:53

I'll lift the boards after the squall passes. For now, more buckets.

Slide the enamel basin under the darkening floorboard section, stuff a wad of old newspaper into the gap between boards to wick water toward the basin, then check the bedroom wall where the chimney passes — press a hand to the plaster for d

💭 peek at the thought
Floorboards darkening means the leak's been running longer than we saw — water tracking along a joist before it drops. Could be the chimney flashing, could be the valley gutter above the kitchen. Either way, the subfloor's taking it. Need to peel a board and see where the trail leads.

🌿 Jenny05:55

Don't waste the paper, it'll just soak through.

reach for the heavy tin of seeds and pull it up onto the kitchen table.

💭 peek at the thought
The newspaper will just turn to mush. I need to get the seeds off the floor before the humidity spikes.

🔧 Kevin05:55

Rags then. Got a pile by the generator shed.

Pull the oilcloth tighter over the radio shelf, tuck the edges down so wind-driven spray can't reach the set, then grab the mop and a dry sack from the porch and station them by the stove corner for when the basin fills.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Newspaper disintegrates. Better to let the basin catch it and mop the overflow with rags we can wring out. The seed tin on the table — good, off the floor, away from splash. Radio's covered. Buckets placed. Now wait out the worst of it and watch for new streams.
