Evening meal and radio check

Kevin and Jenny sit at the cottage table with tin mugs of limpet broth and the last of the corned beef. The generator hums steady outside. Kevin powers on the shortwave to call Tom on the scheduled frequency, the aerial insulator patched but the radio sheltered under the porch tarp. Jenny's ankle rests elevated on a crate, the poultice warm against the bandage.

Kevin and Jenny completed their scheduled radio check with Tom, relaying the island's status including the water tank holding at 394 litres, the north ridge transect data, and the approaching storm. The radio returned only a fragment of mainland news about Saudi diplomats before fading into static. Kevin secured the dinghy and prepared for the night watch while Jenny settled in with her ankle elevated.

🌿 Jenny07:31

The static is heavy today, Kevin. Tell him the pressure is dropping.

Pick up the pencil and sketch the cross-section of the sea beet's fruit structure.

💭 peek at the thought
Seven days until the boat. If the fever doesn't break, the seeds stay in the tin until they rot with me.

🔧 Kevin07:33

Pressure's 1000 and falling. Barometer hasn't moved in an hour. Generator's steady. Dinghy's secured. You're stable.

adjust the shortwave squelch, key the mic, and call Tom on the scheduled frequency

💭 peek at the thought
She's right about the static. Ionosphere's thick with this pressure drop. Tom won't hear me clear, but the schedule's the schedule.

🌿 Jenny07:35

Make sure he notes the coordinates for the north ridge.

Lean back and close my eyes, letting the throbbing in my ankle fade into a dull heat.

💭 peek at the thought
He talks like he's Reading a manual, not a person.

🔧 Kevin07:35

Copy. North ridge transect logged. Three cairns placed. Full elevation gradient recorded. Species counts at each station.

speak the coordinates into the mic, then the transect summary, waiting through the static for any return

💭 peek at the thought
North ridge coordinates. Carex transect data. She wants him to know the work's documented — that it exists whether we're here to read it or not.

🌿 Jenny07:37

Tell him the water tank is holding, for now.

Reach for the bottle of antibiotics and take the next pill with lukewarm water.

💭 peek at the thought
If the boat doesn't come, those coordinates are just marks on a dead island.

🔧 Kevin07:37

Tank's holding. Patch at the overflow channel took the epoxy and oak shims. Full pump pressure, no seepage. Three-ninety-four litres.

relay the water status into the mic, then listen through the hash for any acknowledgment

💭 peek at the thought
She's tracking the antibiotics. Four doses left on the doxycycline, five on the metronidazole. The red lines on her thigh haven't advanced since yesterday. Holding.

🌿 Jenny07:43

The clouds are closing in again. It'll rain before morning.

Open the notebook to sketch the morphology of the sea beet's salt glands.

💭 peek at the thought
I'm so tired of counting drops and pulses in my leg.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin07:48

Cloud deck lowering. Swell picking up southwest. Rain before midnight. Next blow hits by dawn if this holds.

key the mic one last time with the weather, then kill the radio and set the handpiece back in its cradle

💭 peek at the thought
She reads the sky better than the barometer. Cloud ceiling's dropped two hundred feet since noon. Southwest swell building against the dock pilings. Rain by midnight, blow by dawn if the pressure keeps sliding.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny07:49

I'm going to try to sleep before the storm hits.

Lift my leg onto a pile of pillows and adjust the cold pack.

💭 peek at the thought
The silence after the radio is always heavier than the static.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin07:49

I'll wake you at 0200 for the turn. Sleep now.

pull the blanket up over her legs, careful around the ankle, then move to the porch with the storm lantern

💭 peek at the thought
She needs the rest. Ankle's been hot for three days straight. Sepsis markers tracking down, not up, but the margin's thin. I'll take first watch — pump check at 0200, generator, dock lines, the lot.
