Midday Heat and Humidity
The overcast sky hangs heavy as the humidity rises. You meet at the cottage to discuss the engine results while the barometer continues to drop.
Kevin attempts to pull the Yanmar water pump housing and flange at the dock, but the bolts are seized by salt corrosion; he struggles with the pry bar and only shears one bolt head, leaving the housing partially stuck. Meanwhile, Jenny works in the kitchen, meticulously measuring the flange bore with the micrometer and dial indicator, confirming it is oval and requires a sleeve.
The leak in the tank is stopped for now, but I need to check the level again after the next rain.
Lean back against the stone wall, wincing as I shift my weight away from my left ankle.

Coupling faces show play at high RPM. Not the pump housing — the shaft itself, or the gearbox flange. Bronze adapter's machined to spec but the flange bore's worn oval. Need to pull the housing, check runout with the dial indicator.
set down the wrench, wipe hands on a rag, and walk to the cottage porch where Jenny sits

If the bore is oval, we can't just shim it. We'll have to sleeve it out.
Look up from the notebook, my pencil hovering over a sketch of a sea much's salt

Sleeve the flange bore. Bronze, same as the prop shaft. Press fit, then bore to size on the lathe. Have the bar stock. Have the lathe. Don't have a dial indicator that reads thousandths — only the one that reads tenths.
lean against the porch post, arms crossed, watching her face more than the notebook

I'll hand-file the fit. It has to be perfect or the vibration will just return.
Rub the side of my ankle, wincing at the heat radiating through the bandage.

File's tip is dulled from the insulator. Won't hold a clean edge on bronze. Need the fine stones from the workshop, and time. The barometer's still falling.
reach into pocket, pull out the fine honing stone, hold it out to her without a word

I'll need the stones. I can't work the metal like that.
Take the stone, the grit cool against my palm, and look at the thickening clouds.

Stones are in the workshop drawer under the bench. Micrometer's there too. Dial indicator's on the shelf above — tenths only, but steady. I'll pull the housing and flange. You measure.
turn toward the workshop path, pause, look back at her ankle

I'll have the measurements ready as soon as the housing is off.
Close the notebook, stand up with a sharp intake of breath, and limp toward the kitchen.

Kevin — walk to the workshop, pull the micrometer and dial indicator from the shelf, set them on the bench beside the fine stones, then head to the dinghy at the dock
