The Rising Tide and Rain
Steady rain drums against the roof as the water tank finally reaches its overflow point. Jenny sits on the step, wrapping her ankle in a fresh poultice while Kevin watches the barometer needle continue to dip.
Kevin climbed toward the north ridge to monitor the weather, struggling against the steady rain and slick mud path. Jenny stayed at the cottage, handing over the rusted seed tin and managing her painful ankle while the tide began to rise against the dock.
Pressure's falling. West wind coming in. If the helo shows, it'll be in the next two hours or not at all.
Walk to the shortwave, key the mic on Tom's frequency. "Sorrel Island calling. Position holding. Barometer 995, wind west-southwest rising. Standing by for extraction window." Release mic, listen.

Get the tin, Kevin. Now.
Reach into my pocket, pull out grandmother's seed tin, and hand it to him.

Jenny —
Take the tin from her hand. Feel the rusted lid, the weight of it. Don't open it. Slip it into my own jacket pocket, inner left, over my heart.

Go to the north ridge. If they land, wait there.
Lean back against the whitewashed stone, watching the rain blur the edge of the island.

I'll be on the ridge. Radio on channel sixteen. You move if you have to.
Check the tin's secure in my pocket. Grab the handheld VHF from the shelf, the ditch bag by the door. Walk out onto the porch, into the rain. Start climbing the path toward the north ridge, boots sinking in mud.
