Midday on the porch

Rain drums the tarp over the west ridge. Kevin and Jenny sit at the kitchen table with tin mugs of limpet broth. The west shutter rattles in a gust. The barometer on the wall reads 990 hPa. The supply boat is due in four days.

Kevin tested the dinghy engine at half-throttle to check for vibrations after the recent sleeve and shaft alignment. Jenny stayed on the porch to rest her ankle while watching the warm rain fall. They discussed the plan for the next few days before the supply boat arrives.

Shutter's talking. Frame's moving.

set mug down and walk to the west shutter, press palm against the frame to feel the flex

💭 peek at the thought
Barometer's dropped three more millibars since I checked the dock. West shutter's holding but that frame flex is real — punky timber won't take another night of this. Need to sister proper greenheart across the mortise, bolt through to sound wood beyond. Have one 150mm bolt left. Might need to cut threaded rod from the old tank steel again.

It's rotting from the inside out, Kevin. We need more than just new screws.

Take a slow sip of the salty broth and watch the rain run down the glass.

💭 peek at the thought
The wood is too soft to hold a bolt, just like this plan.

Sister block. Greenheart. Through-bolts into sound wood both sides. One long bolt left — rest I'll cut rod.

pull the cedar shims from the mortise, probe the rot depth with a nail puller

💭 peek at the thought
She's not wrong. The mortise is punky clear through. Screws won't bite. Need a greenheart sister block spanning sound timber on both sides, through-bolted. Have one 150mm stainless left. Can cut threaded rod from the old water tank steel for the rest if I drill clean.

Make sure the threads are deep. The wind is going to be meaner tonight.

Rub the swollen skin of the ankle, wincing at the heat radiating through the bandage.

💭 peek at the thought
If he can't stop the rot, the cottage won't survive the winter.

Not threading the beam. Sister spans to king post and sill. Threads bite there.

fetch the greenheart offcut from the dock stack, mark the mortise span on it, carry it to the workbench under the porch

💭 peek at the thought
Threads deep, yes. But the beam face is gone — threads won't hold in wet punk. Sister has to span past the rot entirely, bite into the king post and the sill. Drill 10mm clearance through the sister, tap the king post and sill for 10mm coarse. That's where the holding power lives. Rain's not letting up. Barometer's still falling.

🌿 Jenny11:17

Good. way don't rush the drill, I don't want it splitting again.

Reach for the sketchbook and begin to trace the morphology of the sea beet leaves again.

💭 peek at the thought
The king post is the only thing that hasn't turned to mush yet.
