The Arrival of the Rain

The first heavy drops of rain hit the corrugated roof as the air smells of dry earth and ozone. You and Jenny gather inside as the wind picks up, rattling the cottage shutters.

The heavy wet season air hangs over the cottage as the evening settles. Kevin spends his time checking the dinghy's engine and dock integrity, while Jenny rests on the porch, managing the persistent swelling in her ankle.

Radio's warm. Generator's topped. You want the headlamp or the lantern?

walk to the porch and check the storm anchor warp tension on the dinghy, then secure the tarp battens on the cottage roof west ridge

💭 peek at the thought
Storm's here earlier than the barometer said. West porch frame already flexed 12mm this morning — those improvised 10mm rods won't hold if the gusts hit 180 again. Need to get the storm anchor warp taut on the dinghy and check the cottage battens before the roof goes.

The headlamp. I need to see the sketches clearly.

Reach for the headlamp on the shelf, wincing as the movement jars my throbbing ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping too fast; this storm is coming and my leg feels like it's on fire.

Here.

hand her the headlamp from the shelf, then trim the storm lantern wick and light it as backup

💭 peek at the thought
She's pushing through the pain to work. The sketches matter to her — sea beet morphology, salt gland gradients. She's documenting something she thinks might outlast us here. Hand her the headlamp and check the lantern wick while I'm at it.

Thanks.

Take the headlamp and sit at the kitchen table, pulling the sketchbook out to examine the sea beet drawings.

💭 peek at the thought
He's being too helpful. It makes the silence feel heavier than the heat in my leg.

🔧 Kevin11:44

I'll check the shutters and the generator exhaust tape. Holler if the ankle flares.

walk to the west porch shutter and test the greenheart shim bolts, then check the generator exhaust tape seal and the roof tarp battens

💭 peek at the thought
Good. She's settled. Light's steady. Now the cottage — shutters, porch frame, generator exhaust. Wind's backing southwest, means the west ridge takes it square. Those timber battens on the tarp held last blow but the nails are working loose in wet wood.

🌿 Jenny11:51

I'll tell you.

Adjust the headlamp strap and focus the beam on the gland density gradients in the sea beet sketch.

💭 peek at the thought
If it flares, I'll be screaming anyway. I just need to finish this page before the light flickers.

Kevin — retrieve the last 150mm stainless through-bolt with washers and nyloc nut from the east shutter staging area, then drill a pilot hole through sound timber below the rot line on the west shutter frame and drive the bolt home

💭 peek at the thought
West shutter bolts are the weak point. Greenheart shims held the 180km/h gust at 0447 but the timber's punky — bolts didn't bite. Need to drive the last 150mm stainless through-bolt through the sound wood below the rot line, and sister the second knee while I can still see. Rain's coming harder now.

🌿 Jenny11:53

Jenny — press the pencil to the paper, my hand shaking as I trace the edge of a sea beet leaf.

💭 peek at the thought
The sound of the drill biting into the wood is grating against the pulse in my calf. Everything is vibrating.
