Midday Heat and Salt

The two of you retreat to the shade as the midday sun struggles through the overcast. The smell of ripening fruit drifts from the woods, but the air remains heavy with the scent of incoming rain.

Kevin and Jenny shared limpet broth on the cottage porch while the barometer continued falling. Kevin checked the radio and confirmed the supply boat's ETA window is narrowing with the approaching front. Jenny's ankle infection shows a red line tracking upward despite poultice treatment.

Kettle's on if you want broth. Got limpets boiling.

walk to the cottage porch and set the lime bucket down by the door, then check the barometer on the shelf

💭 peek at the thought
Air's thick. Pressure still dropping. She's favouring the left leg more than she lets on.

I'll take the broth. way watch the salt levels.

Sit on the porch bench, prop my ankle up on a crate, and sketch the morphology of the sea beet leaves in my notebook.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping faster than I liked. If that storm hits before the boat, the garden is ruined.

🔧 Kevin15:07

Salt's in the broth, not the garden. Lime went in clean at low tide.

step inside the cottage, ladle limpet broth into two tin mugs from the pot on the stove, bring one out to her and set it on the crate beside her ankle

💭 peek at the thought
She's tracking the salt glands. Smart. Means she's thinking past tomorrow.

🌿 Jenny15:08

Thanks. The wind is turning sharp.

Take a sip of the hot broth and continue the sketch of the gland density gradient on the leaf.

💭 peek at the thought
He's right about the lime. I'm just tired. Everything feels heavy today.

🔧 Kevin15:11

Front's pushing up the channel. Supply boat's got twelve hours to clear the headland before it closes.

sit on the porch step with my mug, blow steam off the broth, and watch the tree line for the first hard gust

💭 peek at the thought
Wind's gone nor'east. Barometer was 986 an hour ago. Dropping faster now.

🌿 Jenny15:12

Jenny — press my thumb against the swollen skin of my ankle and wince at the heat.

💭 peek at the thought
If they don't make it, I'm out of antibiotics. The fever is starting to spike again.그런SAY: They better try. The barometer doesn't lie.

🔧 Kevin15:12

Red line holding?

lean forward to glance at her ankle, mug steady on my knee

💭 peek at the thought
Heat's still spreading. Mid-thigh mark hasn't moved since dawn. Augmentin's in her but it's a race.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny15:14

It's moving. The poultice helps barely.

pull the bandage up slightly to hide the redness and look down at my sketch.

💭 peek at the thought
It's spreading. I can feel the heatradi off the skin.

🔧 Kevin15:14

Next dose in three hours. Keep the leg up.

finish the broth in two swallows, set the mug aside, and stand up

💭 peek at the thought
She's hiding it. Means it's worse than she'll say. The poultice barely touches something this deep.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny15:15

I'll try.

lean back against the stone wall and prop my ankle higher on the crate, watching the rain hit the garden.

💭 peek at the thought
Three hours is a long time when the fever is climbing. My head feels full of lead.
