Radio contact at dawn
Kevin and Jenny stand on the cottage porch together, the shortwave handset warm in Kevin's hand. The barometer reads 987 hPa and falling fast. A voice comes through clearer now: 'Sorrel Island, this is supply vessel Kestrel. We have your position. Weather window closing. ETA six hours if we run the channel. Confirm you can receive.'
Kevin walked to the dock at first light to check the south piling and found the come-along had slipped under the night's swell, requiring a full re-tension. Jenny stayed on the radio at the cottage for the 0700 check, heard only a BBC World Service broadcast about Yemen, and then moved to the garden to tend seedlings.
Kestrel, this is Sorrel. We copy. We are ready. Bring the wayhy.
Press the PTT button on the radio, watching Kevin's face for a reaction.

Kestrel, Sorrel. Copied. Channel markers holding? South cardinal buoy lit?
key the PTT, hold the handset steady, eyes on the barometer needle

The pressure is dropping too fast for easy sailing.
Lean over the porch railing, scanning the horizon for the cardinal buoy's flash.

South piling. Need to re-check the deadman before they make the entrance.
set the handset on the porch rail, turn toward the dock path

Watch the swell. I'm staying on the radio.
Stand up slowly, favoring the ankle, limping toward the kitchen to grab the notebook.

Don't write the cement. We'll mix lime and beach sand. Saves the lift.
walk down the porch steps, boot heels striking stone, head toward the dock
