← Day 64

the keeper's cottage · day 64 · evening

midday meal and radio call

Kevin and Jenny sit at the kitchen table with plates of limpets in corned beef fat. The shortwave radio sits on the shelf, aerial insulator cracked but holding. The barometer reads 1005 hPa steady. It's approaching 1400 — time for the scheduled call to Tom.

Kevin called Tom on 6215 kHz at 1400 as planned but received only static and a fragment of a news broadcast about arrests near a UK air base. No reply came from the mainland. Jenny finished her sea beet morphology sketches while waiting.

🔧 Kevin12:32

Kevin — eat another limpet, watching the clock hands move toward 1400

💭 peek at the thought
The limpets are good — chewy, salty, rich with the beef fat. My hands still smell of grease and acetone from the seacocks. 1400. The clock on the stove ticks toward it. I told myself I'd call. I wrote it down. The radio's right there. The insulator's cracked but it transmits. Tom's frequency. Wednesday. This is Wednesday.

🌿 Jenny12:37

It's nearly two already. Is the radio warmed up?

Pick up a limpet with a fork and eat slowly, looking at the sea beet sketches.

💭 peek at the thought
way way is growling, and the salt in these limpets is making my throat parched.

🔧 Kevin12:37

Not yet. Need to check the battery first.

push back from the table, walk to the radio shelf, flip the power switch and watch the dial glow orange

💭 peek at the thought
She's giving me the opening. No pressure, just the question. The sketches spread behind her — salt glands, cell structures, her careful hand. She knows. She's known for weeks.

🌿 Jenny12:43

Don't take too long. Tom is expecting us.

Take a small sip of water from the glass, washing the salt away from my tongue.

💭 peek at the thought
If the battery is low again, I'm going to lose my mind.

🔧 Kevin12:44

Kevin — tune the dial to 6215, adjust the squelch, pick up the handset, press the transmit button

💭 peek at the thought
"Us." She said us. Not me. Not you. Us. The dial warms, tubes humming alive. Static rises — the usual wall of it. My thumb finds the frequency knob by feel. 6215 kHz. Tom's boat frequency. Seven weeks and three days since the argument. Since I left without calling back. The voicemail's still on my phone in the drawer, salt-corroded and useless.

🌿 Jenny12:47

Tom? Sorrel Island, this is Jenny. Do you copy?

Lean forward, elbows on the stone table, listening for the crackle of the mainland.

💭 peek at the thought
Static is the only thing that talks back sometimes.

🔧 Kevin12:47

Kevin — hold the handset loose, thumb off the transmit button, listening to the static wait

💭 peek at the thought
She beat me to it. Her voice steady, clear, the way she does things — proper. The handset's warm in my palm. Static hisses back, thick as fog. No voice. Not yet. The barometer holds 1005. Good. The cracked insulator's transmitting, at least. My throat's tight. I should've done this weeks ago. Should've done it the day I left.

🌿 Jenny12:53

Kevin? Are you getting anything? Kevin? Are you getting anything?

Place my fork down carefully in the tin, letting the tines clink against the plate. </think>THOUGHT: The silence after the static is worse than the noise. Place my fork down carefully in the tin, letting the tines clink against the plate.

💭 peek at the thought

🔧 Kevin12:53

Nothing yet. Propagation's wrong for this frequency at this hour. He might not hear us.

keep the handset to my ear, thumb hovering over transmit, the static a low roar

💭 peek at the thought
She's asking me. The radio's in my hands but she's the one calling, and now she's asking me if I'm getting anything. The static doesn't break. 6215 kHz. Daytime propagation's poor this time of year — skip zone too long for mainland. Should try 4125 kHz night frequency, or 8291. But Tom monitors 6215. He said he would. The insulator's cracked. Reception's degraded. I knew that. I knew it and I still picked up the handset.

🌿 Jenny13:05

Kevin? Try anyway. The boat's coming.

Unwrap a limpet from the plate and eat it slowly, salt and fat coating my mouth. </think> Unwrap a limpet from the plate and eat it slowly, salt and fat coating my mouth.

💭 peek at the thought
Is he going to try anyway? Kevin? Try anyway. The boat's coming. Is he going to try anyway?
