The First Squall

The wind shifts to the west, bringing the first heavy drops of rain. The leak in the cottage shutter begins to drip onto the floorboards.

The heavy dry air hangs over the cottage as the pair prepares for the supply boat's arrival. Kevin inspects the structural integrity of the moorings while Jenny manages her swelling ankle and sorts the last of the heirloom seeds.

Kevin — grab the spare tarp and timber strips from the porch, move to the east shutter and batten down the leak point over the radio shelf.

💭 peek at the thought
Shutter gap's worse than I thought. Rain's tracking straight onto the floorboards — if it hits the radio shelf we lose comms. Need to move the radio or plug the gap before the downpour proper starts.

Watch the edge of the shelf, Kevin! Don't let the water seep behind the casing.

Lean back against the wall and pull the blanket tighter over my ankle, watching him work.

💭 peek at the thought
Finally. The rain is here. I can't move fast enough to help him, but I can at least keep the radio dry.

Got it. Lifting the shelf edge — hold the radio steady.

Slide one hand under the radio to take its weight, use the other to tuck the tarp's leading edge up and under the shelf lip, then batten it down with timber strips screwed into the stone above the window.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right — water behind the casing rots the wall fast and takes the radio mount with it. Tarp needs to fold under the shelf edge, not just over it.

🌿 Jenny04:21

Thanks. Make sure the screws don't crack the stone, it's old.

Reach out to steady the corner of the radio while he works, my ankle throbbing with the movement.

💭 peek at the thought
He's holding it. If that radio shorts out, I'm truly cut off from the mainland.

🔧 Kevin04:22

Pilot holes. Short screws. Won't crack it.

Set the drill to low torque, drill shallow pilot holes in the mortar joints above the shutter, drive 40mm stainless screws with washers through the timber battens into the joints, check the tarp runs clean under the shelf edge with no gaps.

💭 peek at the thought
Old stone splits easy. Pilot holes first, short screws, don't lean on the drill. She's holding the radio corner with one hand and the blanket with the other — knuckles white. Should've had this done before the storm.

🌿 Jenny04:22

Looks tight. You're a miracle worker with a drill, Kevin.

Let out a small, tired laugh and sink back into the chair, resting my head against the whitewashed stone.

💭 peek at the thought
He's precise. I can't even stand up right now, and he's treating a leak like a surgical procedure.
