The Arrival of the Rain

The first heavy drops of rain strike the tarp overhead with a loud drumming sound, and the wind begins to howl through the gaps in the walls.

The rain lashes against the cottage as the wind picks up, rattling the loose shutter frame. Kevin works in the gloom to tighten the top hinge bolt, trying to stop the wood from protesting the storm, while Jenny stays inside, tracing the rusted edge of the seed tin and listening to the rising howl of the wind through the gaps in the roof.

Front's here. Pressure's dropped another two millibars since I last looked. Wind's backing southwest — means it'll blow onshore, straight up the porch. Need to check the shutter bolts one more time and make sure the generator's lashed down before the gusts hit forty.

tighten the top hinge bolt on the east shutter frame with the 19mm wrench, then step back and kick the bottom rail to test if the shutter seats solid in the wind

She heard it rattle from the porch. Good ear. That's the top hinge bolt on the east frame — I torqued it yesterday but the greenheart's still swelling from the damp. If it works loose in a gust the whole shutter flaps.
