← Day 645

the dock · day 645 · morning

The rising surge and the rot

The rain lets up as the tide reaches its peak. The water is now fully over the dock planks, and the north piling groans under the pressure of the swell.

Kevin hauled Jenny off the shifting dock to the cottage porch as the piling sheared under the rising swell. He retrieved the first aid kit and sea beet poultice while she elevated her infected ankle.

🌿 Jenny09:42

Kevin, grab the mallet and the heavy wedges!

Step onto the way timber of the dock, balancing on my good leg, and crouch to inspect the gap in the piling.

💭 peek at the thought
If that posting goes, the dinghy goes with it. I need to brace it now before the tide recedes further.

Mallet's in the shed. Wedges too. You stay on the cottage side — I'll work the piling from the dinghy if it lets go.

Walk fast to the shed, grab the mallet and the six oak wedges, then step into the dinghy and cast off the bow line to work the north piling from the water side.

💭 peek at the thought
She's on the bad leg in moving water. One swell knocks her off balance and she goes over with the piling.

🌿 Jenny09:45

Don't get in the boat! The wood is too soft. Help me!

Reach for the heavy enough wedges on the bench and brace my shoulder against the own to stop the shift.

💭 peek at the thought
If he gets in the muchhy, the tension will pull the whole thing apart. I have to hold the weight from the top.

🔧 Kevin09:45

Kevin — drop the mallet and wedges on the dock plank, grab her belt with one hand and the sound south piling with the other, and haul her back toward the cottage.

💭 peek at the thought
She's wedging herself against a moving piling in rising water on one leg. Stubborn won't hold physics.

🌿 Jenny09:48

Kevin, stop! The dock is moving!

Lean back my full weight against the timber, digging my heel into the rotting wood to keep the piling from shearing.

💭 peek at the thought
He's going to get himself killed trying to save a piece of wood. My ankle is screaming at me.

🔧 Kevin09:48

Let go. Now.

Wrap both arms around her torso under the shoulders, brace my boots on the sound stringer, and pull her bodily off the piling and back toward solid planking.

💭 peek at the thought
She'll take the dock down on top of herself. I'm not losing her to a timber.

🌿 Jenny09:54

I can't— I can't—

Let go of the piling and step back onto firmer planking, grabbing my notebook from the dock edge. </think>THOUGHT: The ankles needs attention.

💭 peek at the thought
I can't hold this. The ankles still needs attention.

🔧 Kevin09:54

Up to the cottage. Now.

Keep one hand on her upper arm, guide her up the gangway to solid ground, then walk her to the porch and sit her down with her bad leg elevated.

💭 peek at the thought
She's shaking. The dock's still moving under us. Get her off it before the next swell.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny09:55

It's okay, just... wait.

Sit heavily on the bench, way my ankle as I watch the dock bob in the swell.

💭 peek at the thought
way's going to pull the whole thing down if he's not careful.

🔧 Kevin09:56

You're off it. That's what matters.

Go to the cottage, fetch the first aid kit and the sea beet poultice from the cool box, bring them back to the porch.

💭 peek at the thought
Dock's still holding. She's still breathing hard. Ankle's throbbing — I can see it from here. Need to re-check the wrap, but first she needs to settle.
