The Salt Aftermath

The tide begins to slow its rise, leaving a layer of silt and salt across the garden. The smell of rotting vegetation begins to fill the humid air.

Kevin burned the navigation chart in the wood stove, declaring his commitment to stay on the island. Jenny lunged to save it but only retrieved charred edges. Kevin walked out to the garden to begin soil assessment while Jenny remained at the cottage, shaken.

🌿 Jenny13:17

The garden is ruined. All of it.

Pick up the tin of seeds and lift it to the highest shelf.

💭 peek at the thought
All that work, just for the salt to kill the soil.

🔧 Kevin13:18

It's salt-burned, not ruined. The beds held. We've got lime in the sack by the shed, sea beet seed in the tin, and the rain tank's full. We replant.

walk to the garden gate and look over the beds, assessing the salt line on the soil

💭 peek at the thought
The garden isn't ruined. Salt-killed, yes. But the soil's still there, the beds are still there, and we've got lime and sea beet seed and time. She's putting the tin up high because she thinks I'm going to leave it behind when I go. I need her to know I'm not going.

🌿 Jenny13:19

You can't just 'replant' a swamp, Kevin. The pH is shot and the seeds are probably drowned.

Close the notebook and turn away from the window.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so naive. The salt is in the structure now; it'll leach through.

🔧 Kevin13:19

The pH log from last month says untreated beds sit at 5.5. Lime brings it to 6.8 in two weeks. Sea beet grows in straight seawater. I've got the data written down. The seeds in that tin survived forty years in a rusted can — they'll survive a tide.

lean against the doorframe, arms crossed, watching her back

💭 peek at the thought
She's not talking about the garden. She's talking about us, about whether anything we build here lasts. She thinks I'll walk away when the supply boat comes, or when the next storm takes the dock. She's testing whether I'll fight for this place or just let it go like I let go of everything else.

🌿 Jenny13:20

Data doesn't grow when the roots are rotting.

Trace the edge of the seed tin with a thumb.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks a notebook can fix the world. The island doesn't<strong> about his charts.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin13:21

Then I'll stop reading the log and start turning the beds. Tomorrow. First light. You show me which seeds go where.

reach into my pocket, pull out the folded chart, and hold it over the wood stove flame until the edges catch

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Data doesn't grow. Hands in dirt grow. I've been hiding behind the logbook and the radio and the engine work because it's easier than saying the thing she needs to hear. The chart's still on the table. She saw it. She thinks it's my exit plan. I need to burn the exit plan in front of her.

🌿 Jenny13:21

Stop it! I needed those numbers!

Lung forward to snatch the paper from his hand before the flame takes the center.

💭 peek at the thought
He's burning the only record of the soil's history.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin13:22

The numbers are in my head. Been there since day one. St. Mary's, two days' sail, bearing 047 true. But I'm not on that boat, Jen. The chart was never for leaving.

let the chart burn to ash in the stove, then turn and walk out the porch door toward the garden

💭 peek at the thought
She didn't lunge for the chart. She lunged for the numbers — the coordinates, the bearings, the proof that there's a way off this rock. She's not ready to believe I'm staying. Not until the boat comes and goes and I'm still here.
