EVENING

The rain tapers to a drizzle as the light fades over the island. Kevin returns with the cut chocks, and the tide is now at its lowest point.

Kevin struggled to secure the dock chocks in the driving rain, failing to get the final alignment right. Jenny stayed inside to monitor the falling barometer and tend to her inflamed ankle while the storm worsened. They gathered in the cottage as the wind began to pick up.

🔧 Kevin21:36

Chocks cut. Three. Driving them now while the tide's out.

walk to the dock with three ironbark chocks over shoulder, set them on sound planking, pick up the heavy mallet and drive the first chock into the gap between north piling and sister beam, checking alignment with each strike

💭 peek at the thought
Ironbark's heavy. Arms burn. Good burn. Tide's out far — can see the piling bases now, the rot line. Three chocks cut, ends squared. Need to drive them before full dark. Jenny's at the cottage. Didn't ask me to stay. Didn't ask me to go. Just handed me the thermos when I passed the porch. Coffee's cold now.

🌿 Jenny21:37

Don't strain your back. The wood is swollen from the.

Lean back against the porch post, shifting weight off the throbbing ankle, and watch the barometer needle quiver downward.

💭 peek at the thought
He's still working in the cold, and the barometer is still falling. My ankle feels like it's melting.

🔧 Kevin21:40

Swollen wood holds tighter once it dries. Driving them deep now — they'll lock.

drive the second chock home with measured strikes, wipe rain from eyes, check the third chock fit against the south piling mortise before setting it

💭 peek at the thought
She's watching the barometer, not me. Smart. Wood's swollen, she's right — ironbark won't seat clean in wet mortises. Should've let them breathe. But the gale's Friday. No time. Back's fine. It's the shoulder that clicks.

🌿 Jenny21:41

Just make sure you finish before the tide turns.

Reach for the seed tin on the shelf, tracing the rusted rim with a thumb, checking for any dampness inside.

💭 peek at the thought
If the boat doesn't come, we'll be out of salt in a week.

🔧 Kevin21:42

Forty minutes. I'll be done.

position the third chock at the south piling, drive it with the mallet, check all three are seated flush, then pull the crowbar to test each for movement

💭 peek at the thought
Tide turns in forty minutes, maybe less. She's not talking about the dock. Seed tin's dry — she sealed it proper. Good. She knows. Always knows.

🌿 Jenny21:43

The rain's getting worse. Come in before it gets any colder.

Watch the needle on the barometer drop, then wrap the ankle tighter in the damp cloth.

💭 peek at the thought
He's going to work himself into exhaustion just to keep the dock from floating.

🔧 Kevin21:43

Done. Dock's set.

set the mallet and crowbar against the shed, wipe boots on the mat, step onto the porch and pull the door shut against the rising wind

💭 peek at the thought
Chocks are seated. Crowbar shows no play. South piling mortise took the ironbark clean. North side's solid. Dock'll hold the gale. Rain's biting now — wind shifting southwest. She's cold. Ankle's throbbing. I'm tracking mud into the kitchen.

🌿 Jenny21:44

The kettle's on. Sit down before you freeze up.

Open the heirloom seed tin, checking the seeds for any sign of damp or rot.

💭 peek at the thought
He's shivering, even if he won't say it.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin21:44

Coffee first. Then I'll check the generator lashings.

pull out the chair, sit heavily, wrap cold fingers around the tin mug she slides over, let the heat bleed in

💭 peek at the thought
Kettle's singing. Tin mugs on the table. She's checking seeds I know are dry — watched her wrap them in newspaper and desiccant myself. Her fingers are stiff. Ankle's swollen past the wrap. She won't say it hurts.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny21:45

The generator can wait ten minutes. You're shaking.

way by the stove, watch the rain hit the glass, and feel the throb in my ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
He looks like he's going to collapse if he keeps moving.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin21:46

Not cold. Just... done.

blow across the mug, take a swallow, set it down and flex the shoulder slow, watching her face

💭 peek at the thought
Not shaking from cold. Adrenaline dropping. Shoulder clicks when I breathe deep. Coffee's bitter, hot, good. She's limping bad — favoring the left side, hip compensating. The antibiotic course finished yesterday. Wound looked clean this morning. But the heat in her ankle...

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny21:47

You're shaking, Kevin. Just sit and drink.

Close the heirloom seed tin, feeling the weight of it, and look at the barometer drop.

💭 peek at the thought
He's lying. His hands are shaking too hard.
