The Falling Pressure

The cloud cover thickens over the flat sky as the barometer needle drops to 976 hPa. Jenny sits on the steps with her ankle elevated while Kevin inspects the disassembled Yanmar injector pump on the work bench.

The air is heavy and the sky thickens as the pressure continues to drop. Jenny checks the heirloom seeds for moisture in the rising humidity, while Kevin prepares the dock area for the upcoming supply boat's arrival.

Injector pump's got scoring on the delivery valve seat. Can lap it with valve grinding compound if we've got any left, otherwise I'll machine a bronze sleeve. Either way it's a half-day job once the compound arrives — if the supply boat shows Friday.

pick up the delivery valve and hold it to the light, turning it slowly to catch the scoring on the seat face

💭 peek at the thought
Pump housing's scored where the delivery valve seats — not catastrophic but it'll weep at pressure. Need to lap the seat or sleeve it. Barometer dropping faster than I'd like. Wind'll be southwest by noon, thirty knots sustained if the pattern holds. She's not saying much about the ankle but the swelling's tracking up the calf. Infection's not done with her yet.

🌿 Jenny21:59

Check the seed tin first. If the humidity got them, we're worse than the pump.

Jenny winces as she shifts her weight, then reaches for the rusted tin on the kitchen table.

💭 peek at the thought
If the boat doesn't come, the engine stays a paperweight and my own keeps rotting toward the bone.

Tin first. Pump's not going anywhere.

set the delivery valve down on the clean rag, wipe hands on a cloth, and walk to the kitchen table where the rusted tin sits

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Pump can wait. Seeds can't. Tin E's been through flood and storm — lid's sealed but the sides are eaten through. If salt air got in past the newspaper and desiccant, eleven months of heirloom genetics are dust. Her ankle's worse than she'll admit. The wince told me more than words.

🌿 Jenny22:01

Look at the seal. The air was so heavy this morning.

Jenny opens the tin slowly, leaning in to inspect the seeds for any sign of mold or damp.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks it's just metal, but these are the only things left of her.

🔧 Kevin22:02

Kevin — stand beside her, one hand on the table's edge, watching the packets as she lifts them out

💭 peek at the thought
Heavy air means moisture in every pore. Tin's sides are corroded through — pinholes the salt ate over years. Lid seal held but the walls didn't. If humidity wicked in through the metal itself, the packets are compromised. She's breathing shallow. Pain's spiking again.

🌿 Jenny22:03

They look dry for now. But the tin was sweating yesterday.

Jenny picks up a packet of heirloom tomatoes, running her thumb over the paper to feel for any moisture or grit of rot.

💭 peek at the thought
If they are damp, the whole year of waiting was just a funeral.
