The Heavy Morning Air

Kevin sits at the wooden table inspecting the Yanmar injector pump under the dim light. Jenny sits on a chair, holding the heirloom seed tin while watching the barometer. The air is completely still and thick with the coming rain.

The heavy morning air remains still as the pressure begins a slow rise. Kevin spends the early hours checking the dock integrity and preparing for the supply boat's arrival, while Jenny focuses on the heirloom seeds and managing the pain in her throbbing ankle.

🌿 Jenny22:49

The dock planks are too soft. We need that ironbark finished today.

Open the seed tin to check for condensation.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is rising, but the air is still heavy. If that boat doesn't come tomorrow, the seeds will rot in this damp anyway.

🔧 Kevin22:50

Tide drops at 1000. Gives us three hours before the swell fills in. I'll have the chocks in by lunch if the Yanmar holds.

set down the injector pump delivery valve, wipe hands on a rag, and walk to the porch to check the ironbark sections staged by the shed

💭 peek at the thought
She's right about the dock. The south piling's already given half an inch. If the swell hits before we sister it proper, we lose the whole jetty. Ironbark chocks are cut and seasoned — just need the tide low enough to drive them.

🌿 Jenny22:51

I'll check the seeds first. My ankle is throbbing again.

Lift the lid of the seed tin and inspect for moisture.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always optimistic about the tide. The island doesn't care about his schedule.

🔧 Kevin22:52

Take the stool to the garden wall. Elevate it while you work. I'll bring the tin back after the dock.

pick up the ironbark chocks from beside the shed — two lengths, grain straight, ends chamfered — and carry them down to the dock, setting them on the sound planks near the south piling

💭 peek at the thought
She's favouring the left ankle again. The swelling never fully went down after the coral cut. Should've made her stay off it longer, but there's no such thing as rest here.

🌿 Jenny22:53

I'll stay here. The light is better at the table.

Lean over the tin, looking for beads of water on the seeds.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks a stool will fix the rot. The humidity is in my bones now, not just the wood.

🔧 Kevin22:54

Holler if the barometer twitches below 970.

crouch at the south piling, brace the first ironbark chock against the rotted plank face, and drive the first 150mm stainless through-bolt with the heavy wrench, the ring of steel on steel sharp in the still air

💭 peek at the thought
Stubborn. But the light is better here, and the tin's seal held last check. If she says it's dry, it's dry.

🌿 Jenny22:55

Watch the alignment. The wood is yielding.

Run a finger over the inside of the tin to feel for dampness.

💭 peek at the thought
He's working too fast. The swell is coming before he thinks. If these seeds mold, it's over.

🔧 Kevin22:58

Got a greenheart shim in the pocket. Driving the second bolt through that.

pull the tapered greenheart shim from my pocket, seat it against the chock's inner face, and drive the second through-bolt home, watching the washer bite into the dense timber

💭 peek at the thought
She's not wrong. The piling's got give in it — salt-softened to the core. Bolt'll spin free if I don't back it with something.
