The Squall Breaks

The first heavy drops of rain hit the corrugated roof as the wind picks up from the east.

The air is heavy and still, the grey morning pressing down on the cottage. Jenny sits at the table, clutching the seed tin to her chest, her ankle throbbing as she reaches for the shortwave radio. Kevin is out in the driving rain, sprinting toward the generator shed fifty meters north to secure the door. The tide is low, exposing the rocks near the path, but the wind is shifting faster than predicted.

Kevin, get the tarps inside! The wind is shifting faster than predicted.

Stand up slowly, wincing as my ankle throbs, and move toward the kitchen to grab the seed tin from the high shelf.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping too fast; if the ridge slides now, grandmother's seeds will be washed away before they even take root.

On it. Generator shed door next — you secure the seed tin.

sprint to the porch, grab the rolled spare tarp and the heavy-duty one off the shutters, haul them inside through the kitchen door

💭 peek at the thought
East wind shifting fast means the barometer's lying — pressure's still steady but the swell's already turning. She's right, tarps first, then the generator shed door. My ankle's nothing compared to the roof if we lose it.

Check the way on the shed door twice! It's been rattling!

Reach for the tin on the shelf, my fingers trembling from hunger, andization it under my arm to keep it dry.

💭 peek at the thought
He's moving faster than I can today, but the way door is the first thing that will catch the wind.

Double-checked. Hasp and coach bolts in the workshop. Back in two minutes.

cross the kitchen, out the porch door into the driving rain, make for the generator shed fifty metres north along the path

💭 peek at the thought
She's seen the shed door flex in lesser blows. Hinges are sound but the latch tongue's worn thin — won't hold if the wind gets under it. Need the spare hasp and the coach bolts from the workshop shelf.

Watch the slip on the path, it's getting slick!

Limp to the table, clutching the seed tin to my chest, and reach for the shortwave radio dial.

💭 peek at the thought
Two minutes is an eternity when the barometer is doing that. I need to check the radio before the storm kills the Signal.

Boots have grip. Radio's yours — Channel 16, then Tom's freq. Shout if the barometer moves.

reach the generator shed, yank the door shut against the wind, test the latch — it catches but the tongue wobbles in its mortise, fetch the spare hasp and two 10mm coach bolts from the workshop shelf inside, drill pilot holes and bolt the h

💭 peek at the thought
Path's clay and crushed shell — turns to grease in this rain. She's favouring the bad ankle hard. Radio check's smart; supply boat's frequency first, then Tom's channel. If the front's moving this fast, the boat's skipper might call early.
