The Midday Heat

Kevin and Jenny meet for a midday meal as the wind begins to pick up from the north.

Kevin checked and re-torqued the dinghy mast bracket bolts on the dock, finding the wood saturated but the through-bolts holding firm. Jenny debrided her ankle wound, applied a fresh sea beet-mint poultice, and re-wrapped it cleanly. Both noted the barometer steady at 975 hPa and the wind shifting northerly.

The wind's shifting. Have you checked the tension on the dinghy's new-rigging?

sits at the kitchen table and begins a bowl of leftover limpet broth, watching the clouds gather over the north ridge.

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer is dropping again; I can feel it in my joints before the needle even moves.

Bow line's good. Stern spring and doubled warp held the night swell. But the mast bracket's still skewed — through-bolts helped, not straight. Vibration above half throttle. If the north wind builds, the dinghy'll surge and that bracket takes it.

set down mug, walk to porch, scan the mooring through the window

💭 peek at the thought
She's right to ask. The bow line retie yesterday held, but a north wind pushes swell straight into the mooring. The stern spring and doubled warp took the strain last night, but the mast bracket alignment is still off — vibration above half throttle means the prop shaft or the bracket. If the dinghy surges, that bracket takes the load.

🌿 Jenny03:49

I'll check the torque after I finish this poultice. We need to shim it again if the tide gets any higher.

stands up slowly, wincing as the ankle throbs, and moves toward the first aid kit to gather the gauze and saline.

💭 peek at the thought
He's right about the bracket; the wood is too soft to hold that torque if a real surge hits.

🔧 Kevin03:49

Sit. I'll check the bracket. You've done the ankle twice today.

step to the porch door, pull on boots, grab the 19mm wrench from the workbench

💭 peek at the thought
She shouldn't be walking on it. The debridement was clean, poultice fresh, but the calf inflammation tracked upward yesterday. She did the ridge walk anyway. Now she's moving to the kit like it's nothing.

🌿 Jenny03:51

Don't over-torque the bolts. The wood is saturated.

sits back on the kitchen chair, sighing, and begins deforming the bandage from her ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
way thinks he's being helpful, but he's just avoiding the conversation about the garden.

🔧 Kevin03:51

Won't. Feel for the bite, stop at resistance.

step out onto the porch, descend the ladder to the dock, crouch at the mast bracket base

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Greenheart's dense but the dock timbers beneath are waterlogged. The through-bolts bite into saturated spruce — too much torque and the threads strip or the wood crushes. She knows this. She also knows I know this. She's testing.
