The Approaching Storm

Kevin and Jenny sit on the porch as the west rain begins to lash the island. Kevin watches the falling barometer pressure while Jenny soaks her ankle in a bucket of salt water.

Kevin and Jenny sat in the cottage as the heavy rain lashed against the walls, watching the barometer drop. They listened to the static-filled radio, catching only a fragmented report about an outbreak far away, while Jenny's ankle throbbed as the pressure continued to fall.

Barometer's at 976. Dropping two, three millibars an hour.

lean back against the porch post, watching the rain sheet across the garden, one hand resting on the radio shelf

💭 peek at the thought
Rain's hitting harder now. Barometer's still falling — 976 and dropping. Her ankle's angry red to mid-calf, hot through the bucket. She's not saying much. That's the part that gets me.

🌿 Jenny05:22

I know. I need to check the seals on the roof again.

Jenny dips her swollen ankle into the salt water, flinching slightly as the sting hits the raw skin.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping too fast; if this storm hits before the boat, the north slope will be a landslide.

Roof held last blow. Seals are sound.

reach for the tin mug beside her, blow across the steam rising from the broth, hold it out without looking at her face

💭 peek at the thought
She's deflecting. Roof seals can wait. The red line above the dressing hasn't moved in two hours — that's something. But the heat in the joint when I changed the poultice... that's not nothing.

🌿 Jenny05:23

Thanks. I'm starving.

Jenny takes the mug with shaking hands, wrapping both around the warm metal to absorb the heat.

💭 peek at the thought
He's right about the roof, but the soil is what I'm worried about.

🔧 Kevin05:24

Eat slow. More in the pot.

shift weight off the bad ankle, pull the blanket tighter around her legs where it's draped over the bucket, keep eyes on the tree line where the wind's bending the spruce

💭 peek at the thought
Shaking hands. Could be hunger. Could be the fever climbing. She hasn't kept solid food down in three days. The broth's mostly salt water and corned beef fat — not much, but it's calories and electrolytes.

🌿 Jenny05:25

I'll check the seed tin own, if the rain breaks.

Jenny takes a small sip of the salty broth, eyes tracking the way the water sheets against the whitewashed stone.

💭 peek at the thought
If the north slope goes, my grandmother's seeds go with it.

🔧 Kevin05:26

Tin's sealed. Newspaper wrap's holding. Desiccant's still blue.

reach over and brush a damp strand of hair back from her forehead, fingers lingering a second on skin that's too warm, then pull back to the radio shelf and turn the squelch knob — static hisses, then a Spanish trawler's voice cuts through,

💭 peek at the thought
She's not getting up to check anything. Not on that ankle. The seed tin's under the tarp on the porch — dry, wrapped, done. She knows it. I know it. But she's talking about tomorrow, and that's more than she did yesterday.

🌿 Jenny05:27

What's he saying?

Jenny freezes with the mug to her lips, eyes fixed on the radio dial as she listens through the static.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks the tin is enough, but the humidity is a thief; it gets everywhere.

🔧 Kevin05:28

Vigo Star. Bearing three-four-zero. Eighteen miles out. Heading one-two knots — trawling, not transiting.

adjust the volume knob down a notch, let the static settle between position calls, watch her face in the grey light

💭 peek at the thought
Position report. "Vigo Star, three-four-zero degrees, one-eight miles, making way one-two knots." That's the trawler. Same one as three days ago. They're working the shelf edge, not heading for us. But they're close enough for VHF if the battery holds.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny05:29

They're not coming today.

Jenny sets the mug down on the floor, her fingers white as she grips the edge of the bucket.

💭 peek at the thought
If they're trawling, they aren't in a hurry. The boat might be late.
