Storm Front Arrival

The first gusts of wind rattle the cottage shutters as the smell of ozone fills the heavy air.

Kevin secured the east shutter with the final stainless through-bolt, completing the storm bracing. Jenny rewrapped her ankle with fresh gauze and applied a new sea beet poultice, then organized the grandmother's seed tin and her notebook for the shrine visit. The barometer continued falling to 980 hPa as the tide rose, trapping them at the cottage.

Shutters. Then south piling at low water.

walk to the east shutter and check the greenheart sister knee bolts

💭 peek at the thought
Wind's backing northeast. Shutters first, then the dock at low tide. Sequence holds.

🌿 Jenny07:39

The tide is coming too fast for a manual check, Kevin.

Reach for the gauze roll and wrap my ankle tighter.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks the bolts will hold their own while the island is trying to swallow it whole.

🔧 Kevin07:40

Ankle first. Dock after.

crouch beside her and help secure the gauze wrap

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Tide's pushing hard. Bolts can wait half an hour. Ankle can't.

🌿 Jenny07:41

I can't walk to the dock yet.

Lean back against the kitchen wall and watch the rain hit the glass.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always trying to fix the world while the foundation is still shaking.

🔧 Kevin07:42

Stay. I'll check the sister brace when the water drops.

pull the porch door shut against the wind and check the barometer reading

💭 peek at the thought
She knows her limit. I'll walk the dock alone at low water. Shutters can take another hour.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny07:43

The barometer is dropping faster than the tide, Kevin.

Grab the seed tin from the table and trace the rusted rim with my thumb.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks the water follows a schedule he can negotiate with. It doesn't.

🔧 Kevin07:44

Then shutters now. Dock at slack.

grab the longer stainless through-bolts staged at the east shutter and start driving them home with the heavy wrench

💭 peek at the thought
She's watching the numbers and the tin both. Pressure's falling harder than water's rising. That means wind before surge.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny07:45

Just make sure they're tight. The wind is already picking up.

Pull my knees up to my chest and watch the shadows dance in the kitchen.

💭 peek at the thought
If those bolts own, the whole south face goes into the surf.

🔧 Kevin07:46

They'll hold.

torque the second 150mm stainless through-bolt to 35Nm, check the sister knee alignment, then step back to the porch to watch the barometer

💭 peek at the thought
Two bolts, washers, nylocs. Greenheart's holding. Iron holds. Sequence.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny07:47

The pressure is at 980 hPa now. It's going to be a big one.

Clutch the seed tin to my chest and listen to the wind rattle the stone.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so certain while the sky is literally bruising at us.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin07:48

South piling at low water. North side solid.

pour two mugs of the limpet broth from the pot, set one on the table beside the seed tin, and drink the other standing at the porch door watching the treeline

💭 peek at the thought
980 and falling. Wind'll hit forty before midnight. Shutters done. Generator lashings verified yesterday. Dock's the only unknown.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny07:49

The tide is already too high for the dock anyway.

Take the mug of broth and let the warmth seep into my cold hands.

💭 peek at the thought
He's looking at the trees while I'm looking at the salt.
