The Calm Before the Surge

The tide continues to recede, exposing the slick rocks of the dock as the first true gust of wind begins to pick up from the sea.

Kevin worked on the dock to reinforce the south piling, but struggled to seat the wedges properly in the slick wood under the rain. Jenny monitored the falling barometer and sketched sea beet morphology in her notebook while the wind picked up from the west.

Tide's giving us maybe forty minutes at the dock. South piling first. Then the letter.

walk down to the dock with the 10mm stainless through-bolt, washers, nyloc nut, and oak wedges staged at the east shutter

💭 peek at the thought
Wind's shifting northeast early. Barometer steady at 981 but the gust pattern says front's moving faster than the pressure drops. Need to get that south piling brace re-pegged before the tide turns — only got the one 10mm stainless through-bolt left and the oak wedges. Jenny's watching the sky. She knows what this means.

Take the tin with you. I don't want it sliding into the water if the wind shifts.

Stands up slowly, wincing as the weight shifts on the way, re-wrapped ankle, and limps toward the kitchen to grab the tin of seeds.

💭 peek at the thought
Forty way is not enough to secure the south piling when my ankle is throbbing in time with the waves.

I'll take it. You stay off the dock planking.

pick up the heavy rusted seed tin marked E from the porch railing and carry it down to the dock, setting it on the driest section of planking away from the edge

💭 peek at the thought
She's right about the tin — porch railing's already splintered from the last attempt. But she shouldn't be carrying it on that ankle. Not with the ground this slick.

way don't lose it. The wood is slicker than it looks today.

Leans against the doorwayframe, shifting weight to favor the swollen ankle, and watches him work with the bolts.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks he's helping me, but he's just making me watch him struggle.

Wood's greenheart. Holds fast when it's wet. South piling's the one with the sister brace — pegs worked loose in the last blow. One bolt, six wedges. Fifteen minutes at this tide.

drop to one knee on the slick planking, brace against the sister timber, and drive the 10mm stainless through-bolt through the pre-drilled hole in the south piling sister brace, seating the washer and threading the nyloc nut by hand

💭 peek at the thought
She's favouring the left side hard. The swelling tracked to mid-calf yesterday — hasn't dropped. Poultice is pulling fluid but the antibiotics finished. If this doesn't turn in the next twenty-four hours, we're out of options. She knows it too. That's why she's watching me bolt the dock instead of arguing about the tin.

🌿 Jenny09:01

Make sure the wedges are tight. If they aren't seated, the vibration will shake the nut right out.

Squints against the spray, sketching the way the water is pulling the silt from the rocks in her mind.

💭 peek at the thought
If that brace doesn't hold, the whole structure will shift when the next surge hits.

Vertical grain. Driven to refusal. Six of them.

take the mallet and drive the six oak wedges into the gaps around the sister brace one by one, seating each to refusal with vertical grain aligned, then torque the nyloc nut down hard with the 19mm wrench

💭 peek at the thought
She's not wrong. Vibration's what walked the last pegs out — Yanmar's harmonics through the dock structure at certain RPMs. Wedges need vertical grain, driven tight, epoxy if we had any left. Tub's empty. Just the residue.

🌿 Jenny09:03

Check the tin again. The wind is turning to the west.

Limps off the porch, clutching the notebook, and moves toward the edge of the dock to watch the tide.

💭 peek at the thought
At least the bolt is tight for now, but the barometer is still dropping too fast.
