Pre-Storm Pressure Drop

Kevin sits on the steps checking the barometer as the mercury falls steadily against the glass. Jenny sits beside him, her ankle resting in a bucket of salt water while she watches the clouds thicken over the garden.

Kevin battened both porch shutters tight against the coming storm, then checked and reinforced the garden tarp corners and shade cloth anchors. Jenny stayed off her injured ankle, monitoring the barometer's steady 981 hPa reading and preparing the recovered tin for the supply boat's arrival.

🔧 Kevin08:20

Barometer's 981. Dropping steady. Front'll hit by noon if the wind holds northwest. You want the porch shutters battened now or after breakfast?

check the barometer reading again, then set down the headlamp and stretch stiff fingers

💭 peek at the thought
She's watching the sky, not the barometer. Knows what's coming without the numbers. Ankle's quieter today — no new heat, tracking stopped at mid-calf. Antibiotics did their work. Still haven't written Tom's letter. South piling at 0830. Then ink and paper. No more excuses.

🌿 Jenny08:20

Now. I don't want to be fighting it when the rain starts.

Lift my ankle out of the salt water and wince as the weight shifts.

💭 peek at the thought
It's going to break, and he thinks he can negotiate with it using a few bolts.

🔧 Kevin08:22

Right. Porch first, then the garden tarp corners. You stay off that foot.

stand up, grab the mallet and batten strips from the porch corner, start securing the west shutter with timber battens and nails

💭 peek at the thought
She's moving slower than she lets on. Ankle's better but not right. She'd crawl the garden rows before admitting it. I'll batten the shutters, then check the dock lines again before the tide turns.

🌿 Jenny08:27

Jenny — pull the heavy tin from the floor and place it on the kitchen counter, away from the damp.

💭 peek at the thought
He talks like I'm made of glass, but the island is the thing actually breaking. laterSAY: I'll sit. Just make sure the seed tin is high on the shelf.

🔧 Kevin08:27

—

finish the last batten on the west shutter, wipe rain off the mallet handle, move to the east shutter with the remaining strips

💭 peek at the thought
That tin. The one marked E. She's been moving it every storm for months — porch, shelf, counter, like it's something alive that needs protecting. Never asked what's in it. She never offered. The rust ate through the sides but the lid's still sealed. Some things you don't touch until the owner does.

🌿 Jenny08:29

Make sure the overlaps are tight, Kevin. The pressure is too low.

Lean back against the stone wall, watching him hammer away while the inflammation thumps in my ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
He's working too fast. The wind is going to rip those nails right through the wood.

🔧 Kevin08:29

Overlaps tight. Batten spacing at two hundred mill. East shutter next, then the garden tarp corners.

drive the last nail home on the west shutter, shift the ladder to the east side, start battening the east shutter overlaps with the same spacing

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. 981 and falling. The overlaps matter — wind gets under a loose edge and peels the whole sheet. She knows every storm this island throws. I've seen her read the sky better than the barometer. Ankle's throbbing but she's watching the work, not the pain.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny08:35

Don't forget the tarp. If the wind catches the edge, everything is gone.

Adjust the poultice on my ankle, trying to ignore the heatradi from the skin.

💭 peek at the thought
He's obsessed with the measurements while the sky is literally turning purple.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin08:35

Tarp corners after east shutter. Oak stakes are holding but I'll double-check the lashings.

finish the last batten on the east shutter, set the mallet down, walk to the garden to inspect the tarp corners and shade cloth anchors

💭 peek at the thought
Tarp corners. She's right — caught edge and the whole garden goes. Shade cloth anchors already shredded by that coconut crab last month. Replaced the stakes with oak but the corners need checking. I'll hit the garden after the east shutter. Her hands are steady on the poultice. Doesn't flinch. Never does.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny08:39

Check the north-side anchors first. The wind is already shifting there.

Reach for my notebook, my fingers tracing the sketch of the sea beet morphology from yesterday.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks he can hold back a gale with oak stakes and optimism.
