The Ebbing Tide

The tide continues to fall, revealing more of the slick dock wood. The heat remains heavy as the sky darkens over of the island.

The rain has shifted from a steady drizzle to a heavy, driving assault against the cottage roof. The wind has picked up from the west, whipping salt spray across the island and blurring the horizon. Inside, the tide is receding rapidly, exposing the slick, dark rocks of the reef, while the air pressure continues to drop steadily.

Wall's moving. Salt in the joints. Gonna lime-wash the seaward face tomorrow before the rain.

walk back to the cottage porch, set the bucket of limpets on the stove to boil, check the barometer again

💭 peek at the thought
The tide's dropping clean. North piling shim's holding — no fresh crush marks on the oak. South brace took the last swell without a whisper. Good. But the garden wall's new cracks mean the foundation's still moving. Salt in the mortar joints says seawater's wicking up. Need lime wash on the seaward face before the next rain drives it deeper.

Lime it if you want, just make sure the stays hold this time.

Wince as I shift weight off my ankle, then sketch the crack pattern on the stone in my notebook.

💭 peek at the thought
If the wall goes, the whole garden is lost, and I can't let grandmother's seeds rot in the salt water.

🔧 Kevin12:01

Stays are good. Greenheart sister took the load. But the footing's wet clay — if it slides, the stays just pull the top down with it. Need to check the deadmen anchors at low tide tomorrow.

stir the limpet pot, pour a mug of broth, set it on the porch step beside her notebook

💭 peek at the thought
She's watching the wall like she watches the ankle — mapping the damage so she knows the shape of what's coming. The stays held last storm. But the ground's softer now. Rain's been relentless.

🌿 Jenny12:01

Jenny — take the broth with shaking hands, blowing on the steam while I watch the first heavy drops hit the dust on the porch.

💭 peek at the thought
If the deadmen pull, the north slope is a landslide waiting to happen; I need that stability for the seeds. continuedSAY: Check them twice. If they're loose, we'll have to dig deeper into the clay.

🔧 Kevin12:02

Drink it slow. Second dose in six hours. Full course, no skipping.

pull the blanket tighter around her legs, careful not to jar the ankle, then turn back to the radio shelf to check the barometer reading

💭 peek at the thought
Hands shaking. Cold sweat on a 29-degree evening. The antibiotics haven't touched the fever yet. She won't ask for help — never does — but the tremor in her fingers says the infection's still winning.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny12:03

Jenny — sip the broth slowly, the salt and heat coating my throat as I watch the sky turn a bruised purple.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks the infection is the only threat, but it's the earth that's going to fail. continuedSAY: I know. I'm not going way.

🔧 Kevin12:04

Another front coming. West-northwest. Twelve hours, maybe less.

tap the barometer glass with a fingertip, read the needle at 975, then move to the radio and flip the power switch — static hiss fills the porch

💭 peek at the thought
Bruised purple sky. Barometer's still rising but the cloud bank to the west is building fast — not the storm we just rode out, something new pushing in behind it. She's burning through the broth like it's fuel. Good. She needs the salt.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny12:05

Jenny — lean back against the stone, my ankle throbbing in time with the static, watching the rain pick up speed.

💭 peek at the thought
If the pressure drops that fast, the garden wall won't hold the salt-wash. continuedSAY: Keep the radio on. I want to hear if the boat is delayed again.
