The Storm Breaks

Inside the cottage, the sound of rain on the tin roof is deafening. The small leak in the shutter has turned into a steady drip onto the floor, and the air is cooling rapidly as the wind forces through the cracks.

Kevin prepares the cottage for evening as the sky darkens and the pressure continues to drop. Jenny rests her ankle, though the antibiotic treatment is still being monitored while the dry season heat begins to give in.

Bucket's by the stove. Catch it.

Walk to the kitchen shelf, grab the galvanized bucket, and set it under the dripping shutter leak.

💭 peek at the thought
Shutter leak's worse than I thought. Wind's driving rain horizontal now. Need to get a bucket under it before the floor rots, then batten it proper when the gusts ease.

Check the seal on the kitchen window again. The draft is already coming in.

stand slowly, favoring my ankle, and walk to the window to check the frame.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping too fast; it's going to be a brutal one.

🔧 Kevin12:58

On it.

Cross to the kitchen window, run fingers along the frame feeling for gaps, press on the glass to test give, and check the hinge pins for play.

💭 peek at the thought
Window frame's swollen from the wet. Draft means the putty's gone or the hinge is sprung. Check it now before the glass rattles loose.

🌿 Jenny12:59

We need the tape. The heavy stuff. Not the masking tape.

reach into the tool bag to find the roll of duct tape.

💭 peek at the thought
If that window doesn't hold, the salt air will ruin the sketches by morning.

🔧 Kevin13:01

Top shelf, radio side.

Keep one hand on the window frame testing the draft while glancing toward the shelf above the radio.

💭 peek at the thought
Duct tape's a band-aid on a window frame but it'll hold the draft till the storm passes. Top shelf by the radio.

🌿 Jenny13:02

I see it.

walk to the radio, grab the duct tape from the top shelf, and return to the window.

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer is at 976 and falling. It's coming for us.

🔧 Kevin13:04

Hinge side first. Latch second.

Step back to give her room, watching the tape go on while listening for any new leaks starting elsewhere.

💭 peek at the thought
Good. She's got it. Tape the hinge side first — that's where the wind pries. Then the latch.

🌿 Jenny13:05

I'm on it.

tear a long strip of tape and press it across the hinge gap, smoothing down hard to stop the draft.

💭 peek at the thought
If I can't seal this window, the humidity will rot the seeds in the tin.
