The Storm Arrives
The wind picks up, carrying the first heavy drops of rain against the stone walls. Kevin and Jenny retreat to the shelter of the cottage as the dry season breaks with a gale.
The warm rain continues to drum rhythmically against the cottage roof, the humidity rising as the pressure drops steadily. Inside, the air is thick with the scent of damp wood and the medicinal sea beet poultice. Jenny lies on the cot, her ankle throbbing with a persistent, rhythmic heat, while Kevin watches the barometer with a furrowed brow.
Check the latch on the kitchen window, Kevin. It's already rattling.
Wrap the clean gauze tighter around my ankle to dull the throbbing.

On it.
walk to the kitchen window and work the latch, forcing it home with the heel of my palm until it seats solid

Make sure it's tight. The wind is picking up.
Reach for my sketchbook and start drawing the way the clouds are bruising over the ridge.

Holding.
lean back from the window and glance at the barometer on the shelf — 977 and falling faster than this morning

Check the water tank seals again. I don't want a leak while we are sleeping.
Rub the swollen skin of my ankle, wincing at the heat radiating from the infection.

Checked it at noon. But I'll look again.
walk to the back wall and run my fingers around the tank lid seal and the overflow fitting, feeling for damp or movement
