Morning Observation and Prep

Jenny sits on the porch steps checking her ankle brace while the overcast sky thickens. Kevin stands by the railing, checking the barometer and organizing the gear for the supply boat arrival.

The air is heavy and humid as the pressure continues to drop, signaling incoming rain. Kevin has finished the mortar patch on the northeast dock corner, working quickly to get the joint to skin over before the tide returns. Jenny watches the clouds gathering over the north ridge, concerned that the high humidity will prevent the mortar from curing properly if the storm breaks.

Tide's out far enough. Mortar should set before the water comes back if we move now.

walk down to the northeast dock corner with trowel and mortar bucket

💭 peek at the thought
Barometer holding at 976 and rising slow. Tide's still falling — good window for the northeast patch if the mortar sets before the turn. Supply boat's three days out if it keeps schedule. Jenny's moving careful on that ankle; the poultice held overnight but the swelling hasn't dropped. Need to finish the dock work, run the Yanmar at load, key the radio at 0800. And I still haven't built that sensory garden I talked about eleven months ago.

🌿 Jenny16:03

The humidity is too high for the mortar to cure properly, not if it starts raining.

Stand up slowly, wincing as the ankle shifts, and walk to the kitchen to grab my notebook and pencil.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so obsessed with the dock while the soil is literally way away on the ridge.

🔧 Kevin16:04

It'll skin over before the tide turns. Two hours, maybe three. That's enough to hold the joint until a dry day.

mix the mortar stiff — less water — and start pressing it into the northeast joint, working fast

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Air's thick, mortar won't breathe. But the tide won't wait for perfect weather. Either patch it now and accept a weaker joint, or wait for a dry window that might not come before the boat arrives. She's limping harder today.

If it rains, the salt will just wash it right out before it sets.

Walk to the porch edge, leaning against the whitewashed stone, and start sketching the way the clouds are gathering over the north ridge.

💭 peek at the thought
Three hours isn't enough when the salt air is as heavy as this.

🔧 Kevin16:07

Then we watch the sky. If it turns, I'll tarp it.

keep working the mortar into the joint, smoothing the face with the trowel edge, eyes flicking to the clouds over the north ridge every few strokes

💭 peek at the thought
She's not wrong. Salt kills fresh mortar. But the alternative is leaving the joint open for another tide cycle, and the piling's already shifting. The barometer's rising — rain might hold off long enough. If it doesn't, I'll patch it again. I've done it before.

🌿 Jenny16:07

The pressure is dropping too fast for a tarp.

Sit back down on the step, open the notebook, and sketch the specific morphology of the sea way on the ridge.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks a tarp will stop the world. The moisture is already in the air.

🔧 Kevin16:09

Done what I can. Tide turns in ninety minutes.

wipe the trowel on a rag, stand, and walk back toward the cottage — stopping at the dinghy to check the Yanmar's oil and fuel before the load test

💭 peek at the thought
She's reading the sky better than the barometer. Pressure dropping fast means wind before rain — the tarp'll just sail away. Mortar's in. It'll either skin over or it won't. Nothing more to do here but wait and see.

🌿 Jenny16:09

I'm going to check the tank levels before it breaks.

Stand up carefully, gripping the railing for balance, and walk to the back of the cottage by the rain tank.

💭 peek at the thought
way minutes is all he thinks he has before the island takes everything.

🔧 Kevin16:10

Radio at 0800. I'll key it from the dinghy.

step into the dinghy, check the throttle linkage, and crank the Yanmar — listening for the vibration that shouldn't be there

💭 peek at the thought
Tank's been holding at 397 — near full. She's checking because the overflow repair held last storm, but she doesn't trust it yet. Neither do I. Good habit. I'll run the Yanmar while she's at it, kill two birds.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny16:11

Don't be surprised if the boat is late.

Hand along the side of the 400-litre tank to check the level on the glass gauge.

💭 peek at the thought
He's focused on the engine while the sky is turning that bruised color.
