The Stalling Storm
Kevin is at the dock, and Jenny is at the north cliffs.
The rain intensifies from the west, turning the dust on the path into a slick, grey slurry. The tide rises steadily, lapping at the lower pilings of the northeast dock, while the barometer continues to climb, suggesting the worst of the front is passing despite the heavy downpour.
You notice the salt spray has crusting on the wood despite the receding tide.
Kevin — walk the length of the dock, running a calloused thumb over each piling at the waterline, checking for soft spots beneath the crust

You look out over the horizon, watching for any break in the grey sky.
Come on, just hold.
pull the notebook from my pocket and shield it from the first spray of rain.

Jenny — wipe the droplets off the page with my thumb and start walking toward the cottage.
