Night at the cottage

Kevin and Jenny are inside the keeper's cottage as full dark settles. The wind gusts hard against the shutters. A pot of limpets simmers on the stove. The shortwave radio sits silent on its shelf. Jenny's ankle is elevated on a cushion, freshly poulticed and wrapped. The barometer on the wall reads 1001 hPa, needle steady.

Kevin and Jenny shared a quiet meal of limpets and broth while rain began falling. Kevin checked the shortwave radio but heard only static and a distant BBC report. Jenny attempted to sketch sea beet morphology but her pencil lead snapped, and she switched to a ballpoint pen with trembling fingers.

Eat while they're hot. Shells pile on the tin plate.

ladle limpets and broth into two tin mugs, set one on the table beside Jenny's good hand, take the other to the porch to check the shutter bolts

💭 peek at the thought
Wind's hitting the shutters harder than the barometer says it should. She's quiet — too quiet — but the ankle looks cleaner than yesterday. Steam off the limpet pot's making the air thick.

🌿 Jenny20:44

The salt is good. Thank you, Kevin.

Jenny takes a sip of the hot broth, sketches the rapid morphology of a sea beet leaf in the margin of her notebook, and watches the rain start against the glass.

💭 peek at the thought
My ankle is throbbing in time with the wind, a hot pulse that won't let me focus. If this infection doesn't break before the boat comes, I'm going to lose the leg.

(grunts acknowledgement, blows across his mug)

drink the broth slow, set the empty mug down, walk to the radio shelf and flip the power switch — static hiss fills the room

💭 peek at the thought
She's drawing again. That's something. Hand's steady.

🌿 Jenny20:45

way on the frequencies today?

Jenny leans back, closing her eyes as she feels the heat radiating from her ankle, her hand instinctively hovering over the bandage.

💭 peek at the thought
The static is louder than the wind tonight. He's listening for a ghost while I'm trying to track my own rot.

🔧 Kevin20:46

BBC at 0700. Nothing local. You? (quieter) Tom's frequency's quiet too.

turn the tuning knob slow through the bands, pencil poised over the logbook, wait for anything that isn't static

💭 peek at the thought
Nothing but BBC World Service on 9.5 and a Spanish coastal station bleeding over 6.2. No supply boat, no Tom, no mainland coastguard. Ionosphere's dead tonight.

🌿 Jenny20:47

music but the wind and the waves.

Jenny stops own, the pencil lead snapping against the paper, as she listens to the rhythm of the rain on the stone walls.

💭 peek at the thought
just the white noise of the world. It feels like the island is swallowing us whole tonight.

🔧 Kevin20:48

Pencil lead?

reach into the drawer, pull out the ballpoint pen, set it on the open page of her notebook without a word, then go to the stove and lift the lid to check the limpet pot

💭 peek at the thought
Lead's gone. She doesn't swear. Just stops. The ankle's throbbing — I can see it in the way her jaw sets. Should've checked the poultice an hour ago.

🌿 Jenny20:49

Right. Sorry.

way picks up the pen, her fingers trembling slightly, and begins to sketch the intricate veins of the sea beet leaf instead of the soil pH.

💭 peek at the thought
He always knows when I'm frustrated, even when I don't say a word.
