Pre-Storm Gale Tension

The wind howls through the palms as Kevin struggles to hammer a garden stake into the saturated soil. Jenny holds the shade cloth down, watching the barometer as the pressure begins to dip.

Kevin returned to the shed to gather sandbags and canvas to secure the garden shade cloth against the rising winds. Jenny stayed at the garden to manage her swollen ankle and sketch the soil pH gradient in her notebook. The dropping pressure indicates the storm will arrive much sooner than they anticipated.

Stakes won't bite in this muck. Need deadmen or rock anchors.

Drop the hammer, pull the stake free, and walk to the shed for the sandbags and heavy canvas strips.

💭 peek at the thought
Wind's shifting northeast. Barometer's falling faster than yesterday. She's watching it like she expects me to argue about the forecast. Ground's too soft for stakes to hold — should've driven them yesterday when the soil was firm.

🌿 Jenny00:19

Use the sandbags to weight the corners first, we don't have time for rock anchors.

Winince as I shift weight off my ankle, then sketch a quick map of the north ridge soil stability in my notebook.

💭 peek at the thought
He's going to ruin the whole patch if he doesn't secure the perimeter now.

🔧 Kevin00:20

Sandbags it is. You sit. I'll fetch them.

Walk back to the shed, grab four sandbags and the canvas strips, return to the garden corners.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Sandbags first, argue later. Her ankle's worse than she'll admit — favoring it hard. Should've changed the dressing before we came out.

🌿 Jenny00:21

Be careful with the canvas, the salt air will tear it right off the new stakes.

Rub the antibiotic cream on my swollen ankle and check the barometer reading one last time before the rain.

💭 peek at the thought
At least he's listening for once, even if the wind is doing the talking.

🔧 Kevin00:22

Canvas is sacrificial. We'll replace it when the supply boat comes. Ankle up. Now.

Drop sandbags on the shade cloth corners, weight the edges with canvas strips, then hold out a hand toward the cottage.

💭 peek at the thought
Canvas won't last the season on these stakes regardless. Salt eats everything. But she's managing the job — let her. Ankle needs elevation, not cream.

🌿 Jenny00:23

If the boat doesn't show, those seeds are just going to rot in the mud anyway.

Sigh and lift my leg onto the crate, watching him work the throbbing pulse under the skin.

💭 peek at the thought
He's acting like the boat is actually coming, but the wind is too angry for that.

🔧 Kevin00:24

Drainage holds. Seeds'll wait. You need the leg higher — heart level — and the antibiotics down you.

Shift the crate under her calf, adjust the blanket over her legs, then turn toward the cottage for the meds and water.

💭 peek at the thought
Boat's late. Always late. Seeds won't rot if the drainage holds — lime's working, pH up to 6.8 in the beds. She's deflecting. The ankle's hot through the bandage. Infection's tracking.

🌿 Jenny00:25

way make sure the water is filtered, the tank is already looking low.

Watch him go, then open the notebook to a fresh page to sketch the pH gradient of the north ridge.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks a higher leg fixes the world, but the island is still winning the garden.
