Midday Heat Still

The sun is at its peak behind the overcast layer, and the air is stagnant. You meet at the garden wall to discuss the progress before the rain finally breaks.

Kevin and Jenny work to neutralize the acidic soil on the north slope before the thickening clouds break. Kevin focuses on spreading lime and clearing the drainage trench to prevent the runoff from washing away, while Jenny struggles to clear weeds near the garden wall using a fork despite the sharp pain in her infected ankle.

The north ridge is holding for now, but the soil is saturating. We need to finish the lime application before tonight.

wipe sweat from my brow with a dirty forearm and wince as I shift my weight off my left foot.

💭 peek at the thought
My ankle is screaming and he's looking at the weeds like they're a failure. I just need one patch of earth that won't wash away.

Lime's in the burlap sack by the shed. Spread it thin on the north slope beds — rain'll wash it in. I'll clear the trench outlet first so we don't lose it all downhill.

walk to the garden shed, grab the burlap sack of crushed lime and the garden fork

💭 peek at the thought
She's favouring the left ankle again. The swelling's tracking up past the boot line. Should've checked the drainage trench yesterday instead of the radio mast.

🌿 Jenny00:39

Make sure you don't over-clear it; the erosion will Take the roots. I'll start on the patch near the wall.

pick up the muddy spade and begin hacking at the weeds, biting my lip against the sharp pain in my ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
If he doesn't clear that outlet properly, the runoff will just pool in the depression. I can't let the heirloom seeds rot twice.

Spade's the wrong tool. Use the fork — lever the weeds, don't hack. Saves the ankle and the roots.

heft the lime sack over one shoulder, fork in the other hand, and walk up the slope toward the north beds

💭 peek at the thought
She's pushing through it. Stubborn. The spade's too heavy for one-legged work — she'll torque the ankle worse.

way. Just don't leave the trench too deep or the pH will be skewed again.

drop the spade with a heavy thud and reach for the garden fork, kneeling with a sharp hiss of pain.

💭 peek at the thought
He's right about the fork, I'm being sloppy because I'm tired. My definition feels like it's on fire.
