The Leaking Roof
Kevin and Jenny are inside the cottage as the first heavy drops of the storm hit the roof. A drip begins in the northeast corner.
Kevin placed a galvanized bucket under the cottage leak to catch the steady drip from the roof. Jenny rested her swollen ankle, monitoring her fever while waiting for the evening cool. The air remains humid and still as the tide continues to recede.
Kevin, get the bucket. The northeast corner is leaking.
Wince as I shift weight onto my good leg and move toward the kitchen to find a pot.

Got it.
Grab the galvanized bucket from beside the stove and set it under the drip, then pull the torch from my pocket to check the mortar joint where the wall meets the floor.

It's not just the condensation. The pressure is pushing water through the stone.
Lean heavily on the kitchen counter, lifting my ankle up own a stool to dull the throbbing.

The lime uphill didn't help. Made the ground hold water.
Kneel beside the bucket, shine the torch along the floor-wall joint to trace the wettest run, then stand and pull the hydraulic cement bag from the generator shed shelf — the one that hardened.
