Approaching Rain

The first heavy drops hit the dust as the wind picks up, the season finally breaks.

The air is thick and humid, the 30°C heat pressing down on the cottage. Outside, the tide is receding rapidly, exposing the slick rocks of the tide pools. Inside, the north slope intercept trench is the focal point; water visibly seeps through the greenheart shoring, threatening to undermine the already-saturated dig.

🌿 Jenny06:11

way the tarps inside, Kevin! way!

stand with a wince, GR my ankle, move toward the kitchen to grab the heirloom seed tin.

💭 peek at the thought
If the rain starts now, the north ridge dig will wash out before I can test the pH.

🔧 Kevin06:11

On it.

grab the spare tarp roll from the porch hook and the batten strips leaning by the door, head for the garden beds

💭 peek at the thought
She's moving slow on that ankle but she's moving. The tin first — she's right. Everything else can be replaced.

🌿 Jenny06:13

Watch the slope! It's already pooling!

clutch the seed tin to my chest, lean against the doorframe, watching the rain hit the weeds.

💭 peek at the thought
He's going to get soaked, and he doesn't see how fast the soil is turning.

🔧 Kevin06:13

Beds first. Then the slope.

sprint across the garden, throw the tarp over the tomato and basil rows, drive the oak stakes through the grommets with the mallet, cinch the batten strips down hard with sail twine

💭 peek at the thought
She's watching the north slope. Good. Means she trusts the shoring but knows the water's got no place to go now. I'll hit the beds fast, then check the trench.

🌿 Jenny06:15

Use the stones for the corners!

shift weight to my good leg, hiss as the ankle throbs, watch him struggle with the twine.

💭 peek at the thought
He's moving too fast. The wind is going to catch that plastic if he doesn't weight the edges.

🔧 Kevin06:15

Stones it is.

drop the twine, scoop up the flat beach stones piled by the garden wall, jam them over the tarp corners and edges, weight the whole thing down fast, then turn for the north slope

💭 peek at the thought
Stones. Right. The ground's too soft for stakes to hold in this muck. She's seen it fail before.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny06:17

The overflow dig is already failing, Kevin!

step out onto the porch, wince at the movement, watch the water head toward the ridge.

💭 peek at the thought
The stones won't hold if the wind gets under it. The slope is already a mess.

🔧 Kevin06:17

Digging the secondary cut. Now.

sprint up the north slope, grab the spade from where I left it by the intercept trench, drive it into the sod twelve meters upslope of the failing overflow, heave a new diversion channel toward the west gully

💭 peek at the thought
She's calling it from the porch. The overflow's breaching — I can see the water sheeting over the greenheart stakes from here. If it cuts the ridge, it takes the cottage foundation next.
