Shoring the Spring

Kevin stands at the edge of the new cut, watching the water find its path while Jenny arrives with the greenheart planks, her face set against pain.

Kevin and Jenny shored up the spring overflow dig with greenheart offcuts, driving stakes into the liquefying bank and backfilling with stone and turf. Kevin's strikes loosened the lower bank further, but Jenny's tighter placement and heavier tamping held the line against the surge.

🌿 Jenny05:47

Move back, Kevin. You're compacting the edge.

Kneels in the mud, ignoring the throbbing in her ankle to way the greenheart planks into the overflow dig toion the flow.

💭 peek at the thought
If that spring rises any faster, the whole north shelf is going to slide into the sea taking the seeds with it.

🔧 Kevin05:47

Right. Shoring the upslope face with the offcuts. Back in ten.

step back onto the firmer ground above the cut and walk toward the stacked greenheart offcuts near the garden wall

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. My boots are turning the bank to slurry. The greenheart's heavy enough to settle itself if I let her work.

🌿 Jenny05:49

Bring the short ones! The long ones won't leverage under the pressure!

Wedges the first plank into the slurry, using her body weight to hold the wood against the rushing water.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks ten minutes will fix a structural failure, but if the soil doesn't settle before the rain hits, the whole ridge is gone.

🔧 Kevin05:49

Short ones. Got it.

grab the three shortest greenheart offcuts from the stack and carry them down to the overflow cut

💭 peek at the thought
She knows the hydraulics better than I do right now. Short offcuts, driven vertical, lock into each other. Long ones lever out.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny05:51

Angle them against the flow, don't just drop them in!

Reaches into the freezing water to steady the edge of the plank, teeth gritted as the ankle spikes through her..

💭 peek at the thought
If he doesn't brace them right, the water pressure will just undercut them and the whole trench collapses.

🔧 Kevin05:51

Holding the line. You drive, I'll maul.

take the sledge from the tool rack and drive the first short greenheart offcut into the bank at a forty-five against the current, working from the solid ground above her

💭 peek at the thought
She's holding position on a bad ankle in freezing water. The plank needs to be driven, not placed. I'll drive them from above while she guides.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny05:53

Watch the lower bank! It's already liquefying!

Pulls the mallet from her belt and begins hammering the stake into the mud, forcing the wood to hold against the surge.

💭 peek at the thought
If he doesn't go deep enough, the spring will just rip the whole thing out when the rain really starts.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin05:53

Deeper. Next one tighter to the first.

drive the second offcut hard against the first, overlapping the joint, then the third to close the triangle — checking each blow doesn't shake the bank loose

💭 peek at the thought
She's right — the toe of the bank is turning to soup. If the bottom lets go, the whole face slides. Need to drive the stakes deeper, tighter, and get the next row in before the water finds the gap.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny05:56

Tighten the gap or the water will bypass the whole dig!

Leans her full weight into the mallet, driving the final stake into the slurry until it hits the clay.

💭 peek at the thought
If that triangle doesn't lock, the pressure will shear the stakes off like toothpicks.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin05:56

Backfill with stone and turf. Upstream face. Now.

grab the spade and start cutting turfs from the bank above, stacking stone from the old wall pile against the upstream side of the greenheart triangle

💭 peek at the thought
Three stakes driven, clay holding. The triangle's tight. Water's already diverting around the edges — need to backfill the upstream face with stone and turf before the next surge tests it.
