A Quiet Stretch
Back at the cottage.
The air is heavy and still, the scent of salt and damp earth thickening before the storm. Inside, the steady drip from the cottage shutter hits a bucket with a hollow ring that matches the hum of the radio. The tide is rising, pressing against the dock pilings, signaling the slow approach of the rain.
The rain's coming tonight. I can feel it in the joints.
Sit on the kitchen chair, prop my leg up on a stool, and stare at the tin of seeds.

ladle the remaining broth into a tin mug and set it on the table in front of her, then lean back against the counter with my own mug

Trench bought us time. Not forever. We'll need to run the diversion ditch to the old culvert before the next big rain.
stare at the rain tank gauge, then glance at the notebook open on the table

I know. I'll look at the soil stability in the morning.
Set the mug down and trace the outline of the north ridge in the notebook with a finger.

Take the stick. And the radio.
pick up the walking cane leaning by the door and set it on the table beside her mug, then pull the handheld VHF from the shelf and place it next to the cane
