The First Drops

They carry the heavy tin toward the cottage just as the first heavy drops of the season finally hit the dry dust.

Kevin carried the heavy salt-crusted crate to the cottage porch to protect it from the rising humidity. Jenny knelt to inspect the seed tin, checking for signs of moisture or mold as she carefully lifted the lid.

Porch first. Radio after.

carry the crate up the porch steps and set it down under the overhang, then turn back for the tin marked E

💭 peek at the thought
The rain's here. Tin's heavy — corned beef and rope, not gold. Jenny's ankle won't like the slip on wet stone. Need the radio on 2182 before the boat comes tomorrow.

Carefully. Don't just drop it.

Limp toward the porch, clutching the driftwood cane, and watch him set the tin down.

💭 peek at the thought
He's moving too fast. My ankle is throbbing with every step, but I can't let him just haul everything without a plan.

🔧 Kevin07:44

Not dropping it. Just getting it under cover.

set the tin E down gentle on the porch floorboards, wipe salt crust off my hands on my trousers, then step inside to the radio shelf

💭 peek at the thought
She's favouring the left side hard. Ankle's worse than she'll say. Tin's sealed — whatever's in it stayed dry.

🌿 Jenny07:44

Let me check the seal on that tin first.

Lean heavily on the cane and limp over to the tin on the porch, squinting at the lid.

💭 peek at the thought
He's already thinking about the radio. The boat is due tomorrow, but the air is too still; this storm is going to be a mess.

🔧 Kevin07:46

Lid's tight. Sides are gone though.

stand back with arms folded, watching her work the cane and the tin both, letting her take point

💭 peek at the thought
She's thorough. Good. The rust goes deep on that tin — sides corroded through but lid held. Whatever's inside might still be viable.

🌿 Jenny07:47

I can see the pitting on the rim.

Kneel carefully and run a thumb along the edge of the tin, feeling for loose flakes of rusted metal.

💭 peek at the thought
He's right, the rust is eating through the metal. If the moisture gets in, grandmother's seeds are gone before I even find a plot.

🔧 Kevin07:48

Tin lived on the cliffs. Salt eats everything there.

shift weight to the balls of my feet, ready to move if she wobbles, eyes on the tin rim where her thumb works

💭 peek at the thought
She's close enough to smell the salt on it. Kneeling can't be easy on that ankle. She'll feel the heat in the joint before she admits it.

🌿 Jenny07:48

It's not just the salt. It's the humidity cycling.

Gently lift the lid a fraction of an inch to sniff for dampness or mold.

💭 peek at the thought
I know how salt works, Kevin. It doesn't just eat; it replaces.
