Pre-Storm Humidity Check

Jenny sits on the lower course of the garden wall, wrapping her swollen ankle while she watches the darkening clouds. Kevin inspects the drainage trench near the slope, checking for signs of erosion before the rain breaks.

Dawn breaks over an overcast garden, the air heavy with the 24°C wet season humidity. The tide is low, exposing the rocky flats and the base of the dock. The water tank is perilously full at 397 litres, leaving little room for the rain if the clouds hold.

🔧 Kevin08:30

Trench is clean. Outlet flowing.

Walk back to the cottage porch and check the shortwave aerial connections one more time before dark.

💭 peek at the thought
Trench holding. Water running clear at the outlet. Greenheart triangle's dry. Wall crack hasn't moved in three days. She's moving slower today — ankle's worse than she's saying. Radio call at 0700. Need to be on the set by 0645.

Check the barometer again later. The pressure is dropping.

Tighten the wrap on my ankle and sketch the erosion lines on the north ridge in my notebook.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks a shovel can stop the tide, but the soil is already moving under his feet.

🔧 Kevin08:34

I'll check it at 2200. Before I turn in.

Walk to the cottage porch, tap the barometer glass, and read the needle by the porch lantern light.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Clouds lowering on the north ridge. Barometer was 1024 at dawn — if it's dropped four millibars in six hours, the front's accelerating. Supply boat won't cross if the swell builds past two metres. Need the reading before I call Inverness at 0700.

🌿 Jenny08:35

Just make sure you tell me if it hits 1010.

Stand up, wince, and limp toward the kitchen door to check the seed tin on the shelf.

💭 peek at the thought
2200 is too late if the ridge starts to slide.

🔧 Kevin08:38

1010. I'll wake you if it moves before morning.

Turn toward the radio shack, unclip the handheld VHF from its charger, and carry it to the table beside the shortwave to verify the battery holds charge.

💭 peek at the thought
1010 is the line. Below that and the channel gets ugly fast. She's checking the seed tin because she doesn't trust me to remember what's viable. Fair. I've let things slide. The tin's sealed, dry, heirloom stock sorted. She'll find it how she left it.

🌿 Jenny08:38

Don't wake me up unless the water actually rises.

Open the seed tin and run a thumb over the heirloom varieties, feeling for moisture.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always so sure of the equipment. The island doesn't<strong> about his schedule.

🔧 Kevin08:40

Water rises, you'll know.

Set the VHF on the table, plug the shortwave's power lead into the battery bank, and flip the main switch — waiting for the tubes to warm.

💭 peek at the thought
She means it. She'd sleep through the tide coming through the door if the ankle didn't hurt. Seed tin's her real alarm system — she'd wake for that before any barometer. Heirlooms are dry. Tomato, pepper, sea beet packets crisp. Good.

🌿 Jenny08:41

I'm going to try to sleep.

Sit on the floor, leaning my back against the garden wall, watching the shadows dance.

💭 peek at the thought
The hum of the radio is the only thing louder than the wind tonight.
