The Rising Pressure Shifts

Kevin checks the generator fuel levels while the trade wind picks up speed from the south. Jenny sits in a chair with her ankle wrapped in a fresh poultice, watching the clouds gather over the ridge.

Dawn breaks with a clear sky as the trade wind holds steady against the island. Kevin heads to the south slope to continue mapping movement in the fracture, while Jenny checks the cottage shutters and prepares for the supply boat's arrival in six days.

🌿 Jenny14:21

The tide is dropping too fast, Kevin. Check the moorings on the dinghy again.

Sketch the new fracture lines on the south slope in the notebook.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is going to drop again and he's too worried about fuel to see the sky is bruising.

On it. Generator's got twelve hours at this draw if the diaphragm holds. You want the radio on while I'm down there?

walk down to the dock to inspect the dinghy moorings and seaward bolts

💭 peek at the thought
She's right about the tide. The swell's already hitting the dock different since the pressure dropped. I'll check the dinghy lines and the seaward bolts before the wind shifts.

🌿 Jenny14:29

Leave it on the channel. I need to hear you if the wind starts howling.

Stand up slowly, wince at the ankle, and move to the porch to watch the horizon.

💭 peek at the thought
If the generator fails, we're sitting in the dark when the storm hits.

🔧 Kevin14:29

Channel open. I'll holler if anything parts.

inspect the dinghy's doubled stern spring, bow line, and the mooring ring mortise for chafe or movement

💭 peek at the thought
She'll hear the engine if I test it from the dock. Better to check the lines quiet first, then run the Yanmar if the vibration's still there.

🌿 Jenny14:31

Watch the swell. The water is pulling out further than usual today.

Lean against the stone wall of the cottage, watching the barometer drop.

💭 peek at the thought
The wind is turning sharp. He doesn't see the way the kelp is laying.

🔧 Kevin14:31

North piling shim's moving. Sister plank's working loose. I'll wedge it before the swell hits the dock proper.

grab two cedar shims and the mallet from the shed, drive them tight between the sister plank and north piling to lock the alignment

💭 peek at the thought
Water pulling out further than usual means the swell's building offshore. Barometer's dropping steady. She's seen it too. The doubled stern spring and bow line are holding, but the north piling shim's working loose again — I can see daylight between the sister plank and the original timber. The mooring ring mortise is solid, oak wedges tight. But if the swell wraps around the point at this tide, the dinghy's going to surge hard against that north piling.

🌿 Jenny14:33

Be careful with the mallet. If you slip, the whole section goes.

Trace the edge of the south slope fracture on the map with a pencil, noting the widening gap.

💭 peek at the thought
He's focused on the wood while the whole island is holding its breath for the pressure.

🔧 Kevin14:33

Using the axe flat. Light taps.

set the mallet aside, use the flat of the axe head to drive the cedar shims tight with controlled strikes, checking the sister plank alignment after each tap

💭 peek at the thought
She's not wrong. The whole north section's held together by friction and stubbornness. One bad hit and the sister plank kicks free. I'll tap them in gentle, use the flat of the axe head instead — more control.

🌿 Jenny14:45

It's holding for now. But the barometer is still dropping too fast.

Sit on the way step, rubbing the ankle, and watch the seabirds heading low for the cliffs.

💭 peek at the thought
He's working against the tide, but the sky is the color of a bad bruise.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin14:45

Dock's holding. Going to check the south slope anchors before the light fails.

walk up the path to the south slope, notebook in hand, to inspect the anchor bolts and measure fracture movement

💭 peek at the thought
Shims are seated. Sister plank's locked up tight again. The seabirds going low and the barometer still falling means we've got hours, maybe less, before the wind backs southwest and the swell wraps clean into the dock. Dinghy's secure enough for now. Should check the south slope anchor bolts while the light holds — the fracture's grown and the tamarind roots are the only thing keeping that slope from sliding onto the garden.
