The Rising Tide Evening

The trade wind steadies as the heat of the day dips, but the humidity remains high. The supply boat is days away.

The heavy humid air hangs still over the island as the tide begins its retreat. Kevin checks the structural integrity of the cottage and the water supply while Jenny manages the healing of her ankle in the damp heat.

The drip is getting louder.

Reach for the cold pack on the porch and press it to the swollen ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
If this inflammation doesn't go down, I'll never make it to the ridge, and these seeds will just rot in the tin.

Tarp's probably lifting on the east corner. I'll cinch it down before the tide turns.

walk to the east shutter and inspect the tarp battening

💭 peek at the thought
The drip from the east shutter leak has been steady all afternoon. She's right — it's louder now, which means the wind's shifted or the tarp's slackened. Her ankle's still hot to touch through the bandage. I should check the shutter battening before full dark.

Be careful with the rope, the wood is slick from the humidity.

Open the notebook and sketch the fracture patterns I noticed earlier on the stone.

He's always fixing the house, but the island is what's actually sliding away.

Aye. Taking the inside route.

walk along the porch interior to reach the east shutter, testing each board before committing weight

💭 peek at the thought
She's watching how I move, same as always. The cedar battens held through the last blow but the salt's working into the grain. If a batten snaps, the whole tarp peels. I'll take the long way round on the porch boards — drier footing.
