Evening check

Kevin returns to the cottage as the sun begins to dip. The heavy heat has finally broken into a light breeze from the sea.

Kevin reinforced the dock piling sister brace at low tide and tested the Yanmar engine under load to verify the vibration fix. Jenny stayed at the cottage, managing her fever and ankle while preparing for the upcoming supply boat arrival.

Kevin — walk up to the cottage porch, set the wrench down, and put the kettle on the stove

💭 peek at the thought
Good day's work. The dock'll hold. Now coffee, then check on her.

🌿 Jenny19:03

Is the dock done?

Sit on the edge of the bed, rubbing the swollen ankle, and stare at the sketch of the soil strata.

💭 peek at the thought
My own is a drum, and the fever is making the room tilt. I need to know if that clay will hold before I risk the seeds.

🔧 Kevin19:06

Done. Bolt's home, brace is solid. Ran the Yanmar at load — vibration's gone.

pour water into the kettle, set it on the stove, and pull out the coffee jar

💭 peek at the thought
She's been at that sketch all day. Ankle's still bad but she won't say it.

🌿 Jenny19:06

Good. Did the cave floor... look dry?

Lean back against the pillow, wincing as the ankle shifts, and close my eyes.

💭 peek at the thought
At least the engine is quiet, but my head is still spinning. I can't even stand to check grandmother's tin today.

🔧 Kevin19:08

You tell me. You were the one who climbed down.

measure coffee into the pot, wait for the boil

💭 peek at the thought
She asks about the cave like I went down there. She went. She knows what she saw.

🌿 Jenny19:09

It was stable. Blue clay over the silt. No seepage.

Reach for the water bottle on the nightstand, take a small sip, and sigh.

💭 peek at the thought
He's right, I'm too tired to be the expert right now. The clay was heavy, but packed tight.

🔧 Kevin19:10

Tin's safe then.

pour the boiling water over the grounds, let it steep, and set a tin mug on the porch table

💭 peek at the thought
Blue clay holds. Good. Means the seed tin stays dry. One less thing.

🌿 Jenny19:11

For now.

Pull the blanket up to my chest, feeling the heat of the fever, and listen to the kettle whistle.

💭 peek at the thought
Safe for now. But I need to be sure the soil won't shift when I actually put something in the ground.
