Morning Heat and Rising Pressure

Jenny sits on the porch with her ankle wrapped in a blanket while the wind gusts through the palms. Kevin checks the water level in the tank and prepares the final doses of antibiotics for the morning.

Kevin whittled a garden fork handle from a spruce offcut while Jenny examined the grandmother's seed tin and sketched soil composition notes. The barometer continued falling as the tide began to turn.

Is the water still holding out?

Sketch the pattern of the red streaks on the margin of the notebook.

💭 peek at the thought
The fever is spiking again. If this doesn't break by the boat, I won't be making it to the ridge.

Three fifty-two. Full tank's four hundred. We're fine.

Measure the last two metronidazole tablets from the blister pack into a tin mug, pour hot water from the kettle over them, stir with the spoon until dissolved, then carry the mug to the porch and set it on the table beside her notebook.

💭 peek at the thought
Three fifty-two litres. Enough for weeks if the supply boat comes through. The red streaks on her ankle have faded — metronidazole did its work — but the swelling at the joint still sits wrong. She's mapping the infection like she maps the ridge: precise, detached, writing around the fear.

Thanks for the check.

Take the mug and swallow the bitter medicine.

💭 peek at the thought
Three fifty-two. It's enough, if I don't stop sweating it all out first.

Last of the metronidazole. Doxycycline's done too. If it flares again we're down to poultice and hope.

Sit on the porch step, pull the notebook from my pocket, flip to the sea beet sketches, and add a quick notation: ankle — red margins receded 2cm, swelling persistent at talocrural joint, heat 38.5°C local.

💭 peek at the thought
She took it without hesitation. That's the third course. The streaks have faded but the joint stays hot and swollen — osteomyelitis maybe, or just deep tissue that won't clear without IV drugs we don't have. She sketches the margins like she's documenting a transect. Doesn't complain. Never does.

I'll check the tin again.

Open the grandmother's seed tin and check for moisture.

💭 peek at the thought
Hope isn't a botanical strategy. I need that soil to be dry and my leg to be whole.

It's sealed. I watched the tape cure.

Lean back against the porch post, pull the knife from my belt, and start whittling the spruce offcut into a garden fork handle — long strokes, letting the shavings curl onto the boards.

💭 peek at the thought
She's checked that tin four times in two days. The seeds are dry — I sealed it myself with the desiccant packets and the tape — but she needs to verify. It's control. The one thing she can hold against the rot and the wind and the infection creeping up her leg. I'll let her.
