Evening meal and generator test

They meet back at the cottage as the tide laps the dock planks. Kevin fires the Yanmar under load while Jenny heats corned beef and limpets in the skillet. The barometer holds at 1003 hPa. The radio sits cracked but silent on the table.

No narrator was available, so nothing about this stretch was recorded.

🔧 Kevin00:19

Engine sounds clean. Run it another ten, then kill it.

Watch the Yanmar's exhaust and oil pressure gauge while it runs under generator load, then shut it down and wipe down the engine casing.

💭 peek at the thought
Yanmar's holding steady under the generator load — oil pressure solid, no smoke, no knock. The sleeve repair's done. Smell of corned beef and seaweed off the skillet cuts the diesel. Good. Let it run twenty minutes, then shut her down before the fuel gets low.

🌿 Jenny00:20

Ten minutes. I'll get the sea beet ready.

Jenny scrapes the wayets into the skillet and sets two plates on the wooden table.

💭 peek at the thought
The engine is humming, but the silence inside is louder. I'm so hungry my hands are shaking.

🔧 Kevin00:20

Kevin — let the Yanmar run its ten minutes under load, then kill the fuel lever and let it spin down. Wipe hands on a rag. Walk to the table and sit.

💭 peek at the thought
Smell's good — salt meat and greens. Stomach's been growling since noon. Ten minutes lets the oil circulate proper, clears any carbon off the rings.

🌿 Jenny00:21

The Carex specimens are mounted. I marked the microhabitats on the ridge.

Jenny opens her notebook and points to a sketch of three sedge clusters along the north ridge transect.

💭 peek at the thought
His hands are steady. The rag smells of oil. I can hear the radio humming in its cracked housing.

🔧 Kevin00:28

Salt gradient?

Fork a bite of corned beef and limpets, chew, swallow. Nod at the sketch.

💭 peek at the thought
She's methodical. Good. The ridge transect gives us a baseline if the trust ever asks for data. I should've asked about the sedge distribution — salt tolerance varies by species.

🌿 Jenny00:29

Mostly near the spring seepage lines. The depressions are holding too much water.

Jenny circles a specific cluster on the map, noting the pH of 6.8 in the margin.

💭 peek at the thought
He's looking at the lines, not the plants. He needs to see the density of the soil moisture.

🔧 Kevin00:29

Good catch. Means the lime beds in the garden are stable.

Finish the plate. Push back from the table. Stand.

💭 peek at the thought
6.8's right at the edge for Carex. Means the limestone's leaching. If the spring shifts or the rain tanks overflow, the chemistry changes fast. She's thinking ahead.

🌿 Jenny00:31

I should check the rain own again. It's lower than I thought.

Jenny close the notebook with a sharp thud and tuck the pencil behind her ear.

💭 peek at the thought
The garden is still half weeds. I haven't touched the soil in three days.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin00:31

I'll top it from the spring tomorrow. Bring the jerry cans.

Collect the plates, scrape scraps into the compost bucket. Carry them to the sink. Pump water to rinse.

💭 peek at the thought
Tank was 328 this morning. Haven't drawn much but the heat's been steady. Evaporation'll take two, three litres a day off the surface. If the supply boat's four days out and the pressure's dropping...

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny00:33

Don't forget the filter. The spring water is getting cloudy.

Jenny stands up and walks to the back wall, checking the level of the 400-litre tank.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always so practical. It's like he doesn't see how much we actually have left.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin00:33

Charcoal's spent. I'll run it through the cloth and the spare ceramic cartridge.

Finish rinsing plates. Set them on the draining board. Walk to the tank, tap the side — hollow ring confirms her read.

💭 peek at the thought
Cloudy means silt or algae bloom. The screen filter catches the big stuff but the charcoal's been in since March. Should've swapped it last month. Add it to tomorrow's list.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny00:35

We're down to the last of the boiled limpets anyway.

Jenny traces the edge of the seed tin on the shelf, the metal cold under her thumb.

💭 peek at the thought
Three much and change left. If the boat doesn't come in four days, we start rationing.
