Morning Dose and Tide Check

Jenny sits on the porch with her ankle propped on a blanket while Kevin prepares the morning coffee. He is watching the barometer and checking the antiseptic supply for the wound dressing. The air is still and dry.

Kevin walked the dock at low tide and checked the three new plank bolts and the south piling sister joints with a torque wrench set to 35 Nm. He found the bolts secure and the doubler plate aligned, with no movement under load. Jenny stayed at the cottage and completed the north ridge drainage sketch in her notebook, mapping contour lines and water-flow patterns while her ankle throbbed.

Coffee's hot. Barometer's holding. Dock work at low tide if you want to come watch — or stay put and log the transect data.

Pour two mugs from the kettle, set one on the porch table beside her, sit on the step with mine and watch the needle on the barometer.

💭 peek at the thought
Barometer steady at 1009. Wind gone flat calm. Good day for the dock bolts — no swell fighting the wrench. Jenny's ankle looks cleaner than yesterday; red line hasn't moved past the tattoo. She's quiet this morning. So am I.

🌿 Jenny12:29

I'll stay here a bit. I need to finish the drainage sketch for the north ridge.

Take a slow sip of coffee, open the notebook to a fresh page, and begin sketching the contour lines of the ridge slope.

💭 peek at the thought
He wants me to work the dock, but my ankle is throbbing and I need to finish the soil map for the ridge first.

🔧 Kevin12:37

Take the tin mug if you need a refill. I'll shout if the radio picks up anything on 8291.

Pull on boots, grab the torque wrench and 19mm socket from the workshop shelf, head down the path to the dock.

💭 peek at the thought
She's pushing the sketch instead of the ankle. Stubborn. But the drainage map matters — north slope goes next storm if we don't divert the water. I'll take the dock. Torque the three new plank bolts, check the south piling sisters. Back before the tide turns.

🌿 Jenny12:38

Keep an eye on the clouds.

Wait for the sound of his footsteps to fade, then focus back on the pencil lead as it traces the water-flow patterns near the ridge.

💭 peek at the thought
The island is too quiet when he's not talking; I can hear the salt in the air.

🔧 Kevin12:38

Kevin — walk the garden path to the dock, tide low enough to see the three new planks and the south piling sister brace. Set the torque wrench to 35Nm and start on the seaward-most replacement plank bolt.

💭 peek at the thought
Clouds are clear. She knows that. She's telling me to watch the radio, the horizon, the things she can't from here. Fine. Dock first. Then the Yanmar spark plug swap. Then the radio.

🌿 Jenny12:39

Jenny — lean back against the stone wall, rubbing the throbbing in my ankle, and watch the barometer needle stays steady.

💭 peek at the thought
He's working fast today; I can hear the click of the wrench over the water.

🔧 Kevin12:40

Kevin — shift to the south piling, brace the wrecking bar against the sister joint, lean weight on it — no play. Wipe salt off the stainless bolt head, check the doubler plate alignment. Straight.

💭 peek at the thought
First bolt seats clean. No give in the greenheart. Second bolt — same. Third takes a half-turn before the click. Good. South piling sister brace next. The 150mm through-bolt shows no rust bleed, washers flat, nyloc tight. Wood's dry. No movement under the bar.

🌿 Jenny12:41

The tide is going out fast.

Trace the edge of the sea beet morphology sketch in the notebook, noting how the gland density changes with the elevation on the north ridge.

💭 peek at the thought
The structure of the dock is holding for now, but the salt is a patient eater.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin12:42

Kevin — walk the dock to the northeast corner, crouch at the epoxy patch over the hairline fracture in the stringer. Press the thumb test — hard, no weep. Mark the tide line on the piling with chalk for reference.

💭 peek at the thought
Tide's dropping quicker than yesterday. Spring ebb. Means the dock planks will be fully exposed another twenty minutes — time to check the northeast corner patch too. Jenny's tracking the sea beet data. Good. Someone should.

🌿 Jenny12:43

Watch out for the barnacles on that edge.

Shift my weight toization the pressure on my ankle and look down at the tin of seeds sitting on the table inside.

💭 peek at the thought
He's meticulous with those bolts; I wish I had that much patience with the garden.
