Evening at the cottage

You meet on the porch as the sky thickens further. The kettle begins to whistle on the stove.

Kevin and Jenny shared broth and tea on the porch, reviewing the north ridge drainage sketch and agreeing to dig an intercept trench at morning low tide. Kevin took the midnight radio watch while Jenny retired to bed with her ankle elevated.

🔧 Kevin13:59

Front's accelerated. Wind'll hit force 6 by midnight. You need broth and the second dose before then.

Walk to the stove, lift the kettle off the flame, pour hot water into two tin mugs — one over the tea bag, one over the bouillon cube — and carry them out to the porch.

💭 peek at the thought
Kettle's singing. Storm's pushing in faster than the barometer said. She's on the porch — good, she's moving. Ankle's holding.

🌿 Jenny14:05

I'll take it. I just need to finish this sketch before it rains.

Take the warm mug from Kevin, wincing as the weight shifts on my ankle, and lean back against the stone wall to watch the clouds.

💭 peek at the thought
My own is screaming in time with the kettle, and the air feels too heavy to breathe.

🔧 Kevin14:05

Sketch'll keep. Drink the broth first. Antibiotics need food in the stomach.

Set my own mug on the porch rail, pull the folding stool over with my foot, and sit facing her — close enough to see the line on her ankle, far enough not to crowd.

💭 peek at the thought
She's pushing the ankle harder than she'll admit. The wince was small but real. Sketch can wait — the ridge isn't going anywhere.

🌿 Jenny14:09

I'm not that hungry, but the broth is warm.

Take a sip of the broth, the heat spreading through my chest, and look down at the half-finished map of the north ridge.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always right about the timing, even when I'm too tired to argue.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin14:09

Ridge shedding different since the storm. You're catching the new channels?

Blow across my tea, watch steam curl, don't look at the ankle. Let her show me if she wants.

💭 peek at the thought
She's eating even when she says she's not. That's something. The ridge map — she's thinking drainage, not just contours. Smart. Water's what'll take the garden next.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny14:13

The water is pooling by the basalt shelf more than before.

Point my pencil to a specific curve on the sketch, tracing where the soil is too loose to hold.

💭 peek at the thought
If I don't get the drainage right, the seeds will just rot away into the salt.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin14:13

Intercept trench above the shelf. Two metres deep, stone-lined, daylight at the old gulley. We dig it at low tide tomorrow.

Reach for the notebook, flip to a clean page, sketch the trench line in three strokes — contour, fall, outlet — and slide it across the table without a word.

💭 peek at the thought
Basalt shelf — that's the fracture line from the north slope slip. If water's pooling there, it's lubricating the same plane that moved last winter. She's found the next failure point before it goes.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny14:17

We'll need to use the flat stones from the creek for the lining.

Trace his sketch with my thumb, calculating the gradient in my head.

💭 peek at the thought
If we can divert the runoff, the slope might actually stay stable for grandmother's tin.

🔧 Kevin14:18

Three barrow loads per tide. Morning low's at 0640. Start at the shelf, work upslope. I'll cut the trench, you place stone.

Tap the pencil on the sketch where the outlet meets the gulley — the critical point — then drain my mug and set it down hard on the porch boards.

💭 peek at the thought
Creek stones are flat, stable, and close. She's already running the logistics — gradient, haul distance, tide windows. Good. Means she's past the pain enough to think straight.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny14:19

0640 is early. I'll have the barrow ready.

Stand up slowly, the ankle throbbing with the movement, and look out at the darkening horizon.

💭 peek at the thought
If I can't hold this soil, the whole project is a waste of time.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin14:20

Sleep first. I'll wake you at 0530. Radio watch at midnight — I'll take it.

Stand, collect both mugs, pause with a hand on the door frame. Don't say the rest — that I'll check the dock planks again at 0200, that the Yanmar's spare impeller is in the ditch bag, that I still haven't told her about the signal on 8291

💭 peek at the thought
She's committing. That's the anchor. The ankle will scream at 0640 but she'll be there. Storm's close now — can taste the pressure drop in my teeth.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny14:21

0530 is fine. Don't let me be late.

Watch him go back inside the kitchen, then pick up the pencil to finish the shading on the sketch before heading toward the bedroom.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks I can just sleep with the pressure dropping that fast. The wind is already in the trees.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin14:29

Kevin — set the mugs in the basin, pull the shortwave closer on the shelf, key the mic on 8291 — just listening. Spanish longliner's position report comes through clear: *ciento cuarenta y dos millas al noroeste, rumbo sureste*. Same course.

💭 peek at the thought
She'll finish the sketch. She always finishes what she starts. The bedroom door clicks shut behind her. House settles. Wind's finding the gaps in the shutters now — low moan through the west wall. Barometer on the shelf reads 1001. Dropped five millibars since noon.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny14:29

I'm going to bed.

Limp into the bedroom, carefully elevating the ankle on a pillow, and close my eyes against the image of the map in my head.

💭 peek at the thought
If the boat doesn't come in ten days, we'll be out of salt.
