Evening Porch Meeting

The light onshore breeze cools as the tide continues its rise against the dock. You and Jenny sit on the porch, the tea cooling between you as you plan the final preparations for the supply boat.

The steady rain hammers against the cottage roof, a rhythmic drumming that masks the sound of the rising tide. Inside, the water tank has reached its absolute 400-litre limit, the overflow pipe beginning to trickle steadily into the gutter. The air is heavy with the scent of damp earth and salt as the humidity of the wet season settles into the room.

🌿 Jenny01:41

We need to check the radio one last time before dark, just in case the signal is weak.

Reach for the shortwave radio on the shelf.

💭 peek at the thought
If the boat doesn't come in four days, we'll have to start rationing the dry-mackerel.

Aye. Give her a quick key-up on 2182, see if the shore station answers. I'll check the coax where it meets the mast — that joint's been weeping since the last blow.

walk to the radio shelf and lift the shortwave set down onto the porch table, unscrewing the coax connector at the radio end to inspect the centre pin and shield for corrosion

💭 peek at the thought
Radio check's smart. Last thing we need is the boat calling in blind and us deaf to it.

🌿 Jenny01:43

I'll try the frequency. If it's dead, we'll have to strip the wire back.

Turn the dial to 2182 and press the push-to-talk button.

💭 peek at the thought
If that copper is green again, the whole signal is going to be nothing but static.

🔧 Kevin01:43

Go ahead. I've got the connector.

pull a small wire brush from my pocket and scrub the centre pin of the coax connector, blowing out the dust before threading it back onto the radio's antenna port, snug but not forced

💭 peek at the thought
She's steady on the mic. Good. Let her work the radio while I sort the lead.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny01:45

Okay. If I get nothing, I'm checking the mast.

Listen to the static through the speaker, waiting for a break in the noise.

💭 peek at the thought
I hope that connection holds long enough for a handshake; the salt air eats everything here.

🔧 Kevin01:45

Take your time. If the shore station's up, they'll answer. If not, we climb at first light.

watch the connector seat fully, then pick up the multimeter from the shelf and clip the probes across the coax outer and centre conductor at the radio end, checking for a short to ground

💭 peek at the thought
Static's thick tonight. Atmospherics or the insulator still bleeding signal to ground. Either way, she'll hear it.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny01:47

It looks clear. I'm sending the manifest now.

Press the PTT button on the radio and wait for a response.

💭 peek at the thought
If there's a short, the whole line is shot and we're just ghosts.

🔧 Kevin01:47

Kevin — keep the multimeter probes steady, watching the needle for any flicker while she transmits, ready to pull the coax if the SWR spikes

💭 peek at the thought
Good. She's got a window. Let her work.
