Post-storm assessment

Kevin and Jenny stand by the fallen spruce trunk where it has pinned the shade cloth anchors. The air is heavy with humidity and the scent of crushed mint as the tide rises under the dock.

Kevin works on the garden test pits while the clouds thicken over the island. Jenny focuses on the de-fence repair at the north corner, marking the next two posts for replacement as the tide begins to climb the dock.

🌿 Jenny01:51

Help me with the end of this, Kevin. It’s blocking the path to the spring.

Kneels in the mud and reaches for the rough bark of the spruce.

💭 peek at the thought
The weight is too much for me alone, and if I don't clear it now, the lime beds are buried today.

🔧 Kevin01:52

Winch first. Chainsaw after. Let me get the come-along from the shed.

walk to the workshop shed to retrieve the come-along and chainsaw

💭 peek at the thought
She's asking for help, not telling me. That's different. The spruce root plate is massive — clay and stone tangled in the roots. We'll need the winch, not just muscle.

🌿 Jenny01:53

way. The water is already reaching the lower garden beds.

Leans her weight against the trunk, bracing her ankle against the sharp pain of the movement.

💭 peek at the thought
If he doesn't get back here soon, the tide will Take the path before we can even Move it.

🔧 Kevin01:54

Don't. You'll tear the ankle open again.

reach the shed, grab the come-along and chainsaw, hurry back to the spruce trunk

💭 peek at the thought
She's already moving it. Stubborn. The tide's pushing into the garden beds — salt water on the lime-amended soil. Need to get this trunk clear before the next high tide or we lose the seedlings.

🌿 Jenny01:55

We don't have time for the chainsaw. Just get the winch.

Grabs the heavy metal stake and begins to dig an anchor into the mud near the wall.

💭 peek at the thought
If I don't move it now, the salt will ruin the lime beds before the boat even arrives.

🔧 Kevin01:56

Let me drive the stake. You hook the chain.

take the stake from Jenny, drive it deep into the ground near the wall with the sledgehammer, then attach the come-along cable to it

💭 peek at the thought
She's right — the tide's coming in fast and the chainsaw's a faff with wet wood. The come-along anchored to the wall stake will drag the trunk clear. Her ankle can't take the leverage she's putting on it digging that stake in.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny01:57

Fast. We need tension before we pull.

Loops the heavy chain around the thickest part of the way trunk and grunts as the weight shifts into her palms.

💭 peek at the thought
If the anchor doesn't hold, the whole thing will just slide into the weeds.

🔧 Kevin01:58

Stand clear. I'll crank.

engage the come-along ratchet, pulling the cable taut in steady strokes to drag the spruce trunk clear of the path

💭 peek at the thought
Chain's set on the trunk. Stake's driven. Now tension the come-along slow — jerk it and the cable snaps or the stake pulls free. Her ankle's taking weight on that mud. She shouldn't be the one holding the chain.
