← Day 711

Apart — Kevin at the dock, Jenny at the garden

Supply boat approach at high tide

Kevin stands on the dock checking mooring lines as the supply boat rounds the headland; Jenny works in the garden finishing the spruce clearance and checking lime beds.

Kevin spends the afternoon checking the dock integrity and preparing for the supply boat's arrival. Jenny works on the garden test pits, clearing debris from the terrace edge while the humidity begins to rise.

🔧 Kevin — alone at the dock

You stand on the wet dock planks, the heavy weather line doubled around the mooring ring and north piling. The storm anchor warp runs 50m off the dinghy bow. You check each chafing point, the oak wedges in the mortise, the steel doubler plate bolts. The supply boat's engine note carries over the water — a heavy diesel, slowing. Rain sheets horizontally.

🔧 Kevin02:11

Kevin — walk the dock finger to the seaward end, checking the sistered planks and the new mooring ring bolts under load as the boat approaches.

💭 peek at the thought
Boat's early. Tide's still falling — captain's pushing the window. Better he's here than not.

🔧 Kevin02:16

Morning. Tide's still dropping — you've got maybe forty minutes before the ramp's too steep for the crane.

Catch the heaving line, make it fast to the mooring ring with a rolling hitch, then signal the captain to bring the bow in.

💭 peek at the thought
Good. He's here. Now the work starts.

🔧 Kevin02:28

Crane the diesel drums to the shed path. Flour and valve to the cottage porch. Medical crate — set it inside the door.

Direct the deckhand with hand signals, then unhook the first fuel drum sling and guide it onto the hand truck.

💭 peek at the thought
Fuel first. Always fuel. Then the valve, flour, medical crate. Get it off the dock before the tide turns.

🌿 Jenny — alone at the garden

You lever the last spruce section free, the taproot snapping with a wet crack. The terrace stones settle back with a low grind. Mud cakes your boots. You pull the pH test kit from your pocket, dip a strip in the lime bed runoff — 6.9. The untreated soil beside it: 5.6. You mark the boundary with a cedar stake. The shade cloth flaps, one corner loose where the crab snapped the oak stake.

🌿 Jenny02:09

(to the spruce stump) Well done, old friend.

Replace the oak stake driving my spare cedar stake into the loose shade cloth corner, securing it with wire from my toolkit. Mark the garden boundary with the cedar stake while testing soil pH in the untreated section beside the lime beds.

💭 peek at the thought
Good, the lime beds are holding at 6.9—close enough to grandmother's tolerance. But that untreated soil at 5.6... the north slope's gonna need more than I thought. And that shade cloth corner's gonna tear loose in the next wind.

🌿 Jenny02:15

(calling toward the cottage) Kevin, I'll be inside in a few minutes—I need to look at the medical supplies manifest.

Walk slowly toward the cottage, favoring my right leg, checking my ankle brace for swelling. Stop at the porch step and place my hand on the railing, catching my breath.

💭 peek at the thought
The shade cloth is holding now, but I can hear Kevin coming from the dock. I should check the supply boat manifest for antibiotics before he returns. The ankle brace is still tight—too tight. And I keep thinking about grandmother's seeds, about whether this soil will actually hold them.

🌿 Jenny02:27

(whispering) Come on, just stay dry.

Step inside the cottage, close the door against the wind, and head for the kitchen table. Open the manifest binder to check for the antibiotics.

💭 peek at the thought
The sky is getting darker. If the rain hits before the boat arrives, I need to get the seed tin inside. I'm hungry, but the idea of cooking feels heavy right now.
